bing search accelerator intercepted by charter

Have you ever noticed or used your bing search accelerator in internet explorer to see that it gets redirected via search.charter.net ??

next time check to see if you are affected as a charter customer when you select some text on a webpage, right click, and select "search with bing" (build in IE accelerator).

for me, it gets filtered and redirected every... stinking... time.

and is really annoying.

I wonder if Bing is aware of this or has permitted this.

That should say you need to change to a DNS server that DOES NOT do the re-directing trick as some third party DNS servers do still redirect, which is very easy to do.

Here's the one's I use and NO redirecting at all and faster/more reliable than Charters servers.

DNS Servers - 69.54.70.15 69.7.192.2

"Charter Web Helper"?

»search.charter.net/prefs.php

Odd they're enabled by default.

Could it have slipped your mind?
It was discussed on this forum several times including:

»Borderline-illegal search hijacking is back..

»DNS Redirect to Yahoo Marketing

No biggie -- I'm told the prefs are MAC based ie swap your cable modem and they'll be re-enabled.

I believe both those topics were BEFORE I got my Zoom modem because of Charter messing up those SB6120 modems firmware. That was right around the end March or April last year, I think. That first link was mid March last year and the other was from 2011.

As Chubbysumo says in that first topic also, "just use different DNS servers, and the problem goes away." I have NEVER used Charters DNS, so I might have not even looked at that link for opting out.

Guess I've been lucky. I use Charter's DNS servers normally, and I've never had that switching problem before or after my last modem change.

I'm using SeaMonkey's browser and a Moto SB6121 modem now.

Hmmm... I don't recall seeing any info about that, but I don't use charter's DNS anyway.

I did see this on that page though:
quote:
*Please note, settings are saved for one year and assigned to your cable modem. After one year's time or after changing modems, you will need to reset your preferences.

Yay, Seamonkey!!

Amazing how they try to sneak that past, huh?

Not with my current ISP (Sonic.net, LLC), or my former ISP (PacBell/SBC/AT&T). But played with my mother's CenturyLink connection, and the opt out didn't. I ran with 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.4 with CL.

Most reliable method to opt out of search redirect hijacking is to opt in with a third party DNS provider which doesn't hijack searches.
