...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE
SUNDAY NIGHT FOR POTENTIAL OF SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATION...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHICAGO HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE
SUNDAY NIGHT.

* TIMING...FREEZING RAIN...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET...WILL
DEVELOP SUNDAY AND CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY NIGHT. FREEZING RAIN
WILL CHANGE TO RAIN SUNDAY NIGHT FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ACROSS THE
REGION AS TEMPERATURES GRADUALLY RISE ABOVE FREEZING.

* MAIN IMPACT...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SIGNIFICANT ICE
ACCUMULATION IN EXCESS OF A QUARTER OF AN INCH.

* OTHER IMPACTS...ICE ACCUMULATING ON TREE LIMBS AND POWER LINES
WILL WEIGH THEM DOWN AND WITH INCREASING WIND COULD RESULT IN
POWER OUTAGES. IN ADDITION...PAVEMENT AND SOIL TEMPERATURES ARE
BELOW FREEZING...SO ANY LIQUID PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY FREEZE
ON CONTACT AND RESULT IN VERY ICY AND DANGEROUS TRAVEL
CONDITIONS ON UNTREATED ROADWAYS. SIDEWAYS AND WALKWAYS COULD
ALSO TURN TO SHEETS OF ICE MAKING EVEN WALKING DIFFICULT AND
POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT
ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. THIS STORM IS STILL IN
THE DEVELOPING STAGES AND ANY MINOR CHANGES IN FORECAST
TEMPERATURES COULD RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE FORECASTED
PRECIPITATION TYPE AND RESULTANT ICING THREAT. CONTINUE TO MONITOR
THE LATEST FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS ON THIS DEVELOPING WINTER
STORM.

Tuesday it will be well into the 50s, and then frigid again in time for next weekend. It will be a screwed-up week.

I think the saving grace is we don't have snow on our roofs. Freeze thaw cycle and snow damns.

I didn't notice the ice this morning. Woke up, got my dog leashed up and took a few steps from my front porch and wiped out. Almost slipped another 3 or 4 more times on the walk.

Yeah we have big wads of ice (not really sleet I don't think). Roads are just slushy but that probably won't last.

Anybody used their snow blower this Winter? Mine is still buried in
the garage. I only purchased a bag of salt this Winter and I used it
all up yesterday.

Well it's currently 60 outside at 6:30am. WTF! I posted earlier I went to Indy & Charlotte last week. Indy was really cold (Colder then Chicago at the same time). Yes I know it gets cold in Indy, but when I was out there last year it was between 5 to 10 degrees higher then Chicago.

Charlotte was a different story. It was COLD. 30 to 34 degrees. Got stuck in Charlotte Friday night due to a ground stop at the airport - Ice all over the place. I'm glad I was not at the airport when my flight canceled. I got out late Saturday morning, but everything was frozen and candy coated with ice.

I'm just glad I get to enjoy the 60's today, but generally we don't see swings in temps like this until late February or early March.

Did I mention we need much more rain or snow. If we don't get it, we are going to be in trouble for spring.

It's a pity we're not going to have another 1967 tomorrow. That storm was preceded by temperatures like we'll see today, and we seriously need the moisture. I was almost nine years old when that storm hit.
Unfortunately, most people are blissfully unaware of how serious our drought situation is.

I agree, people are happy we don't have snow, I get worried, and then of course come summer everything is expensive because of the drought.

I still have a big bag of ice melter that I bought two winters ago, since I didn't need to use it at all last year!

Shovel is still in the shed. I thought about shoveling on Friday, but I was sick, the amount was so little, and I knew it would all be gone on Sunday anyway.

I'm thinking that we will set some kind of new record for high temperature today in Chicago. I know right now I'm showing 61 degrees. May have to pull the bike out of the shed and go for a short ride!

It was a shock when I opened the front door at 5:30 this morning and braced myself as usual for the slap of cold air only to find it warm outside. A pleasant shock.

I saw a graphic on the news last week. Over the last month, there has been two feet of snow to the North of us, two feet to the east of use, two feet south of us and two feet west of us. Big storm systems just veered away from Chicago this winter, as if we were in a dry island.

Google just published streetview images of my block, taken last summer, so my house will always be associated with a parched front yard. The new Google interface does not seem to crash as much, and the blended images swoosh along as you cursor down a street. Fun.

They said this morning that the record for this date was 59 and was set in the 50's. The all-time January record was somewhere around 67 set in like the 20's or something. Showing 66 on my outdoor thermometer as of this post.
