[OS X] Imac Upgrade

Hi,
I've a friend with an older iMac (Intel) that has 10.5.8 installed. Some newer versions of software he wants to install call for 10.6.8. I have the disk, but want to know if the upgrade can be carried out without losing any of his data. As far as I know he has no time machine and doesn't backup his files regularly.

You can upgrade from one OS to the next without losing any data in your user accounts. Just run the installer off the DVD.

Back up first. While most upgrades go off without a hitch, you don't want to chance upgrading without backing up. BSOD, GSOD, anything can happen. Using a USB drive with freeware like Superduper would be the best solution.
