I'm curious as well about voip.ms and other solutions. In my case I want a local number that I will never make outgoing calls on.

I want calls to go to voice mail or to be able to call forward to my cell when I am out. Porting an existing # is not important as I am setting up a new business.

I'm pretty sure there is only an outgoing charge for call forwarding. And no, they don't support texting. I have sipdroid on my phone, and Ekiga running on my computer.

Peterboro, Whenever I get a call, the SIP client on my phone and computer both ring, in addition to the call being forwarded to my cell number. Whoever answers first wins. I set up sipdroid to only run on WiFi, so when I'm out and not on WiFi, I can answer the call over my voice plan.

I also set up a custom outgoing caller id for call forwarding and added it to my five so accepting a forwarded call doesn't count against my local minutes.

I love voip.ms, it is so cheap and there are so many features to play around with, it's worth it to set up an account just to play around with.

EDIT: In addition, if you did want to make outgoing calls, like I did, you can set up custom filter rules based on the caller ID. When I call my voip.ms number from my cell phone, I get a calling card style thing, enter a password and then the number you want to call. Because the voip.ms number is on my five, I now have an almost free outgoing option to anywhere in Canada from my cell.

Inbound is either charged by the minute in six second intervals, or unlimited. Outbound is always charged by the minute in six second intervals. Forwarding simply counts as simultaneous inbound and outbound (it's both receiving and making a call).

Inbound rate is typically $0.01 per minute (check your area, some are $0.0149). Outbound to Canada is $0.0052 (half a cent).

So in order for an unlimited DID to make sense, you'd need to use more than 401 minutes inbound every month. The cost for forwarding to a Canadian number would be $0.99 per month base (for the DID, again, some areas are more expensive), plus $0.0152 per minute (a cent and a half per minute).

There is different pricing for outbound for premium versus value. My recommendation, based on DSL_Ricer's experience over the past few years, is to use value routing for North America, and premium routing for overseas. He used to have echo issues calling France when he used Value overseas routing.

I've been with VoIP.ms for a few years and the past 6 months they have not been very impressive. Problems seem to be with their Toronto servers and the customer impact seems like repeat of problems from a couple years ago.
I'm not current on the status because I've been using alternatives.
I suggest you catch up on the issue threads before you make a jump to VoIP.ms

Not to defend VoIP.ms - but some of their current misfortune hasn't been their fault...

While their Toronto DC hasn't been the greatest, they've acknowledged that issue, and are moving (or have moved?) to a new facility. That's something that was within in their control, they admitted it, and took steps to remedy...

They've also been the target of a DDoS attack against several of their US sites...

I've had a couple of lines with them for a while - they've been as good as any other low-cost provider I've used, and their support has generally been excellent...

Re: Voip.ms

Based on martinm's comments here
»[Voip.ms] v. [Anveo]
This was a repeat of what happened a couple years ago before the t2 server was deployed to deal with capacity issues. (my recollection)
He goes on to note that "the situation is way less problematic than a few threads would lead you to believe. Your mileage may vary"
Yeah, it sure did.
