| Youtube slow buffer. I cannot be the only one who has this problem where that has TWC...am I? Why is it so slow to buffer 720/1080p? Is it me, YouTube or TWC at fault here?

But it doesn't work for me when I try to block that IP.
I have 30/5 internet and every other web activity is fine just as downloading torrents and streaming to twitch. Its just that darned YouTube. Thanks for reading ;p |

| You can try changing your DNS. I use Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and have never had a problem. YMMV

Where are you located? If you're in SoCal - I've been having horrible connections at night time as of late - past 8:00PM that makes everything slow down to a crawl. Everything before that is peachy. Not sure what is going on.
More relevant in general, I know some people have mentioned that using an ad-blocker of any sort will cause Youtube to be slower than usual. That's because Google Analytic keeps trying to reach your player for data and it's being rebuffed; so it tries again. Same thing happens on Twitch with adblock too. |

Yea, I'm currently getting a wonderful .9mbps on my 50/5 connection. It's taken at least 20 minutes to buffer a 10 minute 1080P video and it's only buffered 2:45 worth of it so far. So freaking pissed when I know it's been much much faster. I've seen it max out my connection before.
Edit: Well I had put that blocking rule in place before I posted this hoping that would help and I also run adblock so thought maybe that would do it. Turns out adding the firewall rule actually hurt it instead. I did some quick tests with different settings and for some reason now it works fine with the rule off and adblock on. Below are my tests just for reference.
rule off, adblock off, FF - 20mbps
Rule on, adblock on, FF - .5
rule on, adblock off, FF - .5

Pay that link no attention, sir. Just some idiot with an online degree making unfounded accusations against Joe Big Corporation with no technical basis or knowledge. Don't feed the troll. It makes them grow bigger and more annoying to us who actually have some background.
So, no, TWC is not in bed with Google to secretly throttle you(TWC could do that without any redirection, if they were determined to). Those IP addresses are part of what is known as a CDN or content distribution network. In short, they are a set of servers that host the content in geographically distributed locations. Many are locally peered to your ISP. In theory, this should speed things up while reducing transit costs. In practice, there are factors on this wonderful internet that can affect performance between you and any given server. Theory says the closer, the better, but routing, server load, internal ISP issues, bad peers, etc can come into play and make it not so in a particular case.
I do not recommend blocking IPs to a big CDN like XO. These servers can be recycled or their IPs shifted, thus breaking something down the road you may never expect or suspect your blocking put into place a year or 2 ago might be the culprit. I would suggest what a previous poster said, as an interim solution, which is to change DNS servers. The DNS server consults the CDN's DNS host and gives you the IP of its closest few CDN servers(rotated for load balancing, if implemented correctly, but not always the case, as your ISP's server may cache stale entries if configured improperly).
That being said, I tried several 1080p videos on my Debian Squeeze laptop logged into my wifi network(for which TWC is the ISP with the 15/1 package) and had no issues whatsoever. I was actually fairly impressed with the quality. That being said, I never use TWC's DNS servers. The past DDoS attacks on them and subsequent outages in the past left a stale taste in my mouth. Plus, I wanted IPv6 support, which Google, OpenDNS, and Level3 all have. I know TWC don't support IPv6, but I have a miredo tunnel installed that forwards IPv6 traffic. Only catch 22 is your DNS needs to support AAAA records, which TWC's DNS will not. Good luck!

| OK I wont do what I linked in the original post. I want to update you guys that its not just YouTube that is slow but any other video hosting website such as vimeo.com and giantbomb.com
I tried changing DNS servers to Googles and opneDNS but it didn't help.
I don't know what else to do. Sigh. |

I have been having the exact same problem. 50/5 Internet, but like clockwork 7pm EST YouTube becomes unplayable at anything 480p+ with the rest of the internet being ok. It's only after midnight that YouTube's videos become viable again.

Im new to this forum so I apologize if this gets double posted but I am having the same problem: from after 7 till midnight my connection gets shaped. My download for any video stream or http download gets throttled to 300KB. Meanwhile bittorrent traffic never gets throttled(probably because its encrypted and coming from hundreds of sources). It seems Time Warner started throttling/shaping their traffic shortly after the free "speed upgrade" last month. Total bullshit if you ask me. Please, take me back to the old system.
After midnight downloads hit 2MBps again. Rinse and repeat. |

Same problem here. Its not only youtube but most http downloads. Vimeo does this as well. All of it hovers around 300KB for me and my brother(different apartments)... After midnight everything goes back to normal. BTW, bittorrent traffic never slows down which i assume is because the hundreds of sources for traffic. It looks like they only traffic shape single streams of packets? |

I'm seeing the same problem here too in recent days.
can't play anything higher than 480p w/o buffering.
this only happens with streaming videos.
If TWC is truly throttling us than i'm dumping them ASAP. |

South end of Milwaukee area, same problem. I have never used TWC's DNS, and Youtube is practically unwatchable at ANY time. I can go from a Youtube video that spends most of its time buffering to a Liveleak or Vimeo video that will load and play with no buffering at all. I also see this a lot when watching movie trailers from us.imdb.com, but when I go through the Apple web site, they load and play with no problem.

I've been having the same problems in the Queens, NY area.
Around morning time I won't have any problems with Youtube or Twitch.tv
Then around 4PM or so most YouTube videos take forever to buffer. Sometimes even buffering 240p videos take too long to watch it instantly. The worst is trying to watch Twitch.tv streams. It would be perfectly smooth at 1080p+ and then when evening rolls around you get constant stuttering and pausing even at the lowest resolution setting.
If I do a tracert on Twitch.tv, it seems to start timing out after 66.109.9.210. I asked TWC about this in the direct forum and they said they have no problems on their end.
Also, trying to reboot the modem just causes it to not reconnect for several hours so I'm never rebooting the modem again. |

Yeah, I'm in the same boat--Bayridge, Brooklyn. I also noticed a problem with streaming on Amazon Prime via my PS3 starting back in mid-December. Prime is almost unusable during reasonable daylight/evening hours. |
