TELUS no longer offers modem only solutions?

Today I attempted to get TELUS to send me their Speedtouch 516 modem to use with my own wifi router and was told that they no longer are able to send this out to me from their warehouse.

Does TELUS really not offer any modem only solutions so we can properly use our own wifi router? I've been advised to turn off the wireless on the ZyXEL VSG1432 which I have done and have it working with my own router, however because the ZyXEL isn't in bridge mode, I can't access the router configuration from outside the network because the remote routing to the router won't get past the gateway.

You could buy a OEM Zyxel and use that. My friend gave me ALU but those are rare. (>$200)

I know i could but my point is Telus used to provides the modem only choice with their service for those of us that want to use our own wifi router. I have no interest in paying another $100+ dollars for something that Telus used to provide free with their service.

What modem are you currently using?

As stated in my original post, I am currently using the TELUS ZyXEL VSG1432 with the wireless and DHCP turned off connected to my Cisco E4200V2.

I'd like to be able to access my router remotely as well as some computer on my home network from outside my network, but to do that I have to have ports on the router forwarded and I can't do that without the ZyXEL being in bridge mode.

Why aren't you using the Actiontech V1000H? It at least allows bridging by using custom firmware.

I'm using what I can get TELUS to send me. Also the ZyXEL is not very good for wifi distance in my house and I much prefer the power and configurability of the Cisco E4200 V2 router.

Can you please poke around and see if there is a menu to update the firmware anywhere in the web interface?

There is, and I already have the latest version.

Thanks.

I can't seem to find any firmware to download so I can mod it for your device
In the worst case keeping fighting with TELUS for your V1000H!

And it's easily bridgable? If so I'll hound them tomorrow for it.

I believe so. Can easily get a custom firmware (most of the time) that I will send you a DL link to.

Did you get or use the tech log in? cause I can see bridge mode under Wireless, DMS
I'm in the same boat as you are and was told the samething. Then I found out I couldn't access the bridge mode page, so I just did it.

I did use the login you spoke of and finally got it to work late last night. Under the broadband setting there were 3 entries above the bridge mode button. I can't remember what they were called but one was labeled starting with 35, one with 33 and the third was default. I deleted the 35 and the default as I remember reading elsewhere that 35 was for Bell, then selected the 33 and changed that to bridge mode. I did not hit apply as it appeared to set by itself.

I restarted the modem and then tried to access it again and found I couldn't, as you usually can't while in bridge mode. Next I accessed the router and reset it to default and once everything restarted I confirmed I had Internet access through the router and the Internet light was off on the modem as it was indicated it would be. I then configured the router with the default ip range of 192.168.*.* that was present by default.

I hope this helps anyone else trying to accomplish this.

Once the Zyxel is in bridge mode, I access the web interface by connecting directly to it via ethernet, bypassing the router.
