Told to use the WindStream SpeedTest

Click for full size
I called again, as I do every day now. The phone techs told me that the only reliable speed test would be their own at »speedtest.windstream.net

Great to know, since it can't even measure my speed!

I Disagree. They say this to keep you within their network so your connection won't show "Real World" speeds.

Example: Run a tracert command on speedtest.windstream.net and you'll notice the trace won't leave windstreams network and as far as I can tell doesn't even reach the backbone hubs servers so it's not based "In the real world" Useally it just reaches the first 10 hops, so if the issue is further out in their network it won't show it in the test.

And even it's own tests are flawed. My line is set to max 743KB upload speeds but according to their test I upload at 4MB...lol I wish! :O)

This tester is amusing, I kinda wonder how they come up with the metrics for it. Is there any actual math behind it, or are the numbers purely arbitrary? I'll have to run some network usage tests while using the tester to see how much data is actually being transferred.

If someone trashtalks the speedtest.net servers, give them numbers from the FCC's own speed tester instead.

They want you to use their speed test because it's directly connected to their network(meaning fastest speed possible because of a "direct" connection)

That's not quite accurate. We ask that people use our speed test, speakeasy.net (which is a competitor) or the FCC's tester due to uniformity. We know that there will be no fluctuation in results based on what servers you hit, and that all 3 use the same guideline/requirements. Many other sites have a lot of flash which will impact results or they will let any Joe that wants to download their software be speed test 'servers' for them. There is one major site in particular that is guilty of that yet most everyone uses it simply because it is the first such site to come up when you search speed test in Google.

Aaron,

Regardless of the flash or not if the bandwidth is there the flash shouldn't impact our results that heavily. When I test with that site I use a server that is less than 30 miles from my house and is on a fiber connection. My cable provider I had was 30/1 with 20ms ping. Tests were 32-35/.9-1.2 all day long 24/7/365 even on wifi. I go to the providers speedtest link and get 35-40/1.5 with 14ms ping. Flash doesn't impact the speeds that much. And while we are on the subject the flash shouldn't impact WS's results that heavily either.

I am not here to get in a arguing match with you as you have facts from WS you can utilize, and all I have is real world testing to fight with

BTW Have you seen my PM? Any news?
