Ya... 5.8 mbit video + audio + http overhead + Tcp overhead... comes out to pretty close to 7 mbit.

So, no. They aren't releasing higher bitrates.

My bad. I take back what I said. But then again I expect the bitrate to include the audio stream.

well being as boxee themselves are dropping support for boxee will any of the 3rd party apps markers even bother with updates? I hope they would to support the users but I would not blame them if they don't bother.

It's too bad, I love my boxee box... but I'm not surprised.

It's a moot point. Boxee doesn't even receive 1080p streams as it is even though the HW is capable of playing it.

what really? so netflix is not HD at all on boxee? Man that sucks I'd be pissed a paid for that thing. For near 200 bucks that company should have done more.

It plays Netflix in HD... but it's probably 720

Bandwidth considerations

Finally, here are some general bandwidth guidelines to consider when evaluating your DSL, cable or fiber optic service:

SD (480p) requires 1 Mbps
HD (720p) requires 2.25 Mbps
In summary, there’s a reason why Netflix is the leader in streaming entertainment and disc delivery. They’ve got great choices, tons of content, and a fantastic interface for getting the right movies to your screen quickly.

It plays every other file off the network like a champ... so it's not a total waste.

I just wish it had better general support all around.

ah thanks man I'd be a bit pissed as a owner with them already dropping support for it. At least the hackers can do some good stuff with it now. I mean if it was a $100 box it's one thing to get a year or two out of it but the thing was near 200 bucks.

I've had both mine for close to two years now (if not more I can't remember) so I'd largely say I've gotten my money's worth on them.

That's not really a whole lot for what it is.

Yes, it is 720p. Personally I'm upset about not being provided 5.1 sound.

How do you have it connected to your sound system?

I've had the sound connected with both an Optical Cable and HDMI and I was getting 5.1 with my amp.

The audio setting would show as dolby digital, but the five speakers were active.

I guess my question for you is were you getting not getting 5.1 on the the selections that display HD 5.1, or are you not getting 5.1 on the selections that display HD only?

Netflix does not provide 5.1 sound to the Boxee.

You could be right about that... I flip back and forth between the Boxee and the PS3 so I could be confusing the two...

It is annoying as I watch tons of local content via the Boxee which pretty much all of it has DTS or AC3 sound but Netflix only has stereo sound.

Unless it's changed since their announcement in 2010, Netflix uses Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) for 5.1 and 7.1 audio. Dolby Digital Plus is not backwards compatible with Dolby Digital (AC-3). The Boxee does not list support for DD+, and it's unlikely to have enough processing power to decode such things in software like the PS3 could (the PS3's CPU is very slow for general-purpose stuff by today's standards, but it's still pretty fast at raw math stuff).

Which is pretty sad, because when I load a backed up blu-ray with DTS-HD audio the Boxee runs it like a champ and it sounds glorious.

Is it a matter of decoding the stream on the fly that makes it so resource intensive?

If it has dedicated hardware that supports DTS-HD, it requires little CPU resources. If it doesn't have hardware that supports DD+, then it would require large CPU resources. I don't know why Netflix chose DD+, hardware support for it is far less common than Dolby Digital or DTS.

Agreed... could've been a licensing cost issue, also when Boxee originally shipped it didn't support Netflix, so its hardware might have been designed with other purposes in mind.
