Netflix has been actively engaged with the working group that's trying to figure out how to do DRM directly in the browser, but nobody has agreed on anything yet. There aren't a lot of options that are cross-browser. There's Flash, there's Silverlight, there's Java... Of the three, Silverlight was the only real option when Netflix first implemented their current platform. Flash's streaming and dynamic bitrate changing support was pretty poor at the time, and I'm not sure if they've even caught up to Silverlight yet in that regard.

Before Silverlight, I believe they embedded Windows Media Player.

The only other solution, really, is for Netflix to do their own plugin. The problem is that the browser vendors can't even agree on a plugin format at this point. Most browsers support NPAPI, the plugin format used since Netscape 2.0. Chrome is migrating to an enhancement of that called PPAPI, but ironically despite the fact that NPAPI is intended to simplify cross-platform compatibility, Mozilla has refused to adopt it. And IE is still doing their own thing at this point.

Hmm. But why do they use Silverlight for the browser version? I thought it was the DRM these companies love about it (although it is a capable streaming platform..for clients with silverlight support anyways).

So what do you think is holding them back from using HTML5 in the browser, or at least offering at as an option? Perhaps browser support just isn't there yet? Or perhaps the fact that many browsers are more open than closed-source apps and it would be easier to divert the stream?

By not making available a Super-HD capable win32 Netflix application, some clever people (possibly with a mental disorder like Aspeger) will see this as a challenge to create their own application, one that could potentially circumvent Netflix's own security, allowing anyone to watch Netflix content without the need for an account.

The more barriers are set up, the more tempted some people will want to break down those barriers.

There are half a dozen devices on the list, I'm sure there is plenty of differences between supported devices already.

Sounds like they made a winrt version (along with roku version, ps3 version, apple tv version, wii u version) but not a win32 version, at least not yet.

I wonder if it could have something to do with DRM, that they will only support this on closed platforms?

Someone posted elsewhere that it has to do with the Super HD working with the netflix app in the windows 8 app store, and the reason for no win7 is that there is no app store there. Pretty weak if that is the case.

Noticed the exact same thing happening with my ps3. Weird.

Before the "update" I always used to stream at High HD. Now its High SD, but the picture is HD for sure.

Streaming on a 7 meg line.

That's high enough to generally avoid any artifacting, although there can be some detail loss in high motion scenes. Netflix is variable bitrate, though.

Then again, VC-1 has in-loop deblocking, so like h.264 you'd never see blocking artifacts anyhow.

When introduced, VC-1 was only slightly worse than h.264, but since then, VC-1 AP was defined that makes it a heck of a lot more similar to h.264, and also h.264 encoders like x264 have gotten enormously better.

The best test is captain america if you ask me as the opening with the dark and snow blowing really shows the short coming of netflix as it's a bit fizzy and you can see pixels like mad.

That's for sure. The rates that were settled upon were insane and not realistic of any real world costs for delivering the bits across their respective networks.

Rogers does not even have tiers that could not use this new encoding profile.

Well on the Roku, you can't tell which shows / movies are HD or Super HD. For me the only way i could determine that was to watch the real-time Bandwidth meter in Tomato. A "regular" HD stream would play at around 4 mbit/sec, and a Super HD stream would play at around 7 mbit/sec.

One thing's for sure: i hope the CRTC will lower wholesale rates for IISP's soon, because even the 400 GB cap that Start offers on their Pro Cable Internet package won't be enough, especially if you have multiple residents in a dwelling watching Super HD streams simultaneously, and consuming a lot of bandwidth.

No, they're still re-encoding content.

The player interface tells you just as it does for HD and 5.1 sound.

Netflix already has 1080p streams but they also white list which devices are able to play 1080p streams even when the hardware is capable of playing 1080p content. This is just poor and confusing marketing for re-encoded 1080p streams with higher quality.

It doesn't matter if they are peering (although it definately helps a LOT) - it matters if they have OpenConnect appliances in their network. Having said that, the preference is to fill the appliances through peering vs transit where ever possible.
