Re: [BC] Bad TV image

said by Kruisey:

Did you get your picture quality fixed last night then?

A contractor (not Telus Teir 2 support) showed up and watched TV with me. All he touched is the remote. All he said is that "It looks normal." I set to "Global" channel for both the FTA and STB, then switch back and forth to show him the different. He admitted there is different (Joe Biden was on the TV. His face look like a baby infant when switch to Telus STB.)but he kept saying "It's normal." Well then I have nothing to say.

Today I called Telus again. Tried to cancel the service. But I end up to have another home visit next week. They promise me this time will send a tier 2 tech and this will be the last try.

I am very sorry you have had to go through this.
How old is your TV because as I found out it sure can make a difference.?
It can also be the feed that Telus has no control over.
If you asked a friend to let you look at the channels on their set.Someone who lives in your area?
Otherwise I do hope this level 2 guy can help you.If he cannot then nobody can .

Yah I don't get it. The box is outputting in 1080p. They've tried different boxes with the same result. The signal is getting through to the TV so it's not an hdmi issue?

It doesn't even seem to occur on every channel? It's in the OP nitpicking because some channels do a pisspoor job of airing in HD, telus compresses the signal, and HD Optik isn't as good as other sources like Bluray and OTA?

I'm not an expert, but if the STB is outputting an HD signal there's no issue with the signal into the house. If the bandwidth was being slow the picture would break up, or not come through at all. It absolutely wouldn't cost the picture to soften.

My guess is the OP isn't happy with the quality of optik tv, and keeps getting techs out to fix something that isn't broke?

Correct.

Yes, not sure why TELUS is sending out techs.

Yes I'm not happy. You are right about this.

If you're within the first 20/30 days I think, you can cancel it.
TELUS Satellite has better quality than Optik, since the higher bit rate transmitted via satellite allows for less compression. If you still want your television needs serviced by TELUS, that'd be a viable alternative.

I currently have OTA but had optik. I can notice the difference on HD channels but honestly it is not that much of a difference. One thing I did do on my optik STB box was change the HDMI setting. I forget what it was called but it was some like hdmi low or something like that. I wish I could tell you what the setting was but dig around in the menus. It fixed it for me.

That was a fix for the black level bug which has since been corrected by Telus.

This is just bad compression on Telus' part, some of which looks like they are recompressing Bell satellite feeds that are already low bitrate. Some people's eyes just can't notice it, and some TV's make it more obvious than others.

But Kruisey, if you think a good TV makes the Optik picture better you are mistaken. A good TV makes all of the errors in the Optik stream far more apparent. A cheaper TV applies a lot of processing to the picture to make up for an inferior panel which helps to mask the issue.

I don't go by price but quality when I buy a TV and honestly my picture quality on my 46 " screen is fabulous on channels like CBC 602 Hd.Very important channel for Canuks
Oasis is terrific as well.
Some of the HD movies come over better than others I think its to do with the feed that Telus receives from Shaw and Bell.
Remember Telus is the competition whether that makes a difference I don't know?.

For what it's worth, I spent a week with Telus Optik TV when I was in Burnaby visiting my brother this past October. I have Bell Fibe TV at home and I was expecting it to be pretty much the same. To say I was surprised at how compressed it looked is an understatement, the bitrate they seem to have set for HD channels must be less than what Bell uses in Ontario because it was night and day.

To be fair that was the only installation of Optik TV I've ever experienced so take it for what it's worth.

Not being technical at all.
Is it up to the owners which quality of feed they send to Telus?

I've always considered HDTV-by-wire as a work in progress, because there simply aren't enough bits for some scenes to work properly. We need more bits, or at least variable-rate streams; perhaps this will happen as 50 Mbps+ service spreads. I suspect this is something for another generation of set-top boxes and distribution equipment.

You know you've watched too much HDTV when you go outside and see a real babbling brook, and realize that it's not macroblocking.

What I was saying is that Samsung's TV's have been doing more and more processing of the image over the years in order to get costs on the panels down. You wouldn't want ghosting on your TV would you? There is a reason why input lag on their TV's is so high.

The networks encode a single feed for distribution, it would add a lot of extra cost to encode it multiple times just to piss off your competitors.

It seems like Telus is taking the OTA feed and transcoding it to H.264, and for almost everything else taking Bell's already transcoded stream and running it through their encoders again. Which would explain why some channels are so blurry. Like Oasis, which looks pretty bad on most content.

I was flipping between CBC's OTA feed and Optik during the game yesterday and in the intermission for example, Weeke's suit had stripes that were visible on the OTA feed. On Optik his suit was a blurry mess.

My channel CBC 602 HD Hockey is excellent also Oasis always has a good picture and great colour..
On some HD channels the picture is not sharp likewise colour not so good.It must be the feeddue to the very fact some pictures are excellent on other channels,
I do find the smart panel on the set nothing to do with Telus is slow.
Have my Telus box switched off and the smart panel gives me everything in slow motion e.g utube.
Has anyone noticed that when watching a digital channel one has to turn the sound up ?Going back to an HD one if one forgets to turn the sound down its truly loud.

Unfortunately, until they lower the compression, I think the TELUS Optik will always look "bad". It's no Shaw in terms of PQ, that's for sure. The price is right, however, so I'll just keep sucking it up.
