I'm insanely impressed with LTE

Off my samsung Galaxy S3, tethered i'm hitting these speeds... it's crazy

I'm sure i could get even higher if i moved my phone to a more open area. Insane how this compares to our current wired solutions

edit: Those complaining about this being "general". I was simply amazed at the speed difference in my LTE connection and my 6 meg DSL with TSI.

Don't worry folks, Mayans didn't predict the world coming to an end, it sure won't because i was wowed by LTE vs TSI DSL.

Edit again: Maybe this needs further explanation. I have family in Chatham who previously had Teksavvy Wireless. My original amazement may not have been clearly detailed, but it was the speed difference compared to a phone.

How stable is the ping? Probably pretty good, I'm guessing.

If there are any services available below $40/month for 10GB or more usage, it might be an interesting home internet solution for some.

Ping is rock solid for me. I usually hit 25-45. We're on an employee plan. My wife works for Telus health who recently bought out her old company and what's sickening is we pay $15 /month for our plan. Our plan is a $75 a month plan for any regular customer.

You can go with an internet stick on LTE though.

It honestly goes to show what type of plans they could offer but inflate big time. We have unlimited canada wide calling but only 5 GB data.

This is actually our alternative internet since the S3 has it's own built in "router".

I need to call them and find out what their "to a maximum" is.

I don't think that is the case exactly.. There is only so much bandwidth available, and if a lot of people started using LTE type technology for their home internet connection, you wouldn't be getting those speeds any more

I keep looking for data plans that are a good home based business backup internet service. Wind's $5/day pay your way is okay, but the service level isn't great. Virgin (which is Bell I guess) has a tablet flex plan that costs $5/month as maintenance, but $35 for any months when you really use it (up to 5GB, then it gets VERY expensive). They don't list it as a Data Stick plan though, so maybe they don't let you tether?!?

LTE is awesome. The resulting battery drain...is not.

Wind is a great backup but don't expect quality service at least in my opinion. We bought 2 different data sticks and though we could use the internet, latency and stability became an issue.

You do have a point, but still goes to show what type of plans that are far more competitive they could offer for just a regular phone not including data

I can tell my battery was burning hot after 2 hours 3 computers on it.

I'm in central mississauga, phone is inside somewhere in the kitchen no windows in the kitchen sadly even our router get's bad signal through this house. I'd guess my speeds would increase if i brought the phone closer to a window or door for better signal.

Nevertheless, 15meg upload is pretty nifty for a wireless network

I provided a Rogers LTE stick to our staff who ran a 10 computer LAN gaming tournament setup for a weekend in the Palais des Congres, used to play various games that require online such as League of Legends. I used a CradlePoint router to plug the LTE stick in and share it among all the computers.

The players and staff running it both loved it. It had much better latency and performance than the paid wifi in the building.

Yeah that's impressive. I'll have to checkout that router as well, thanks

So far i've found LTE leaps and bounds better so far over my DSL and cable.

Unless the cell guys stop setting caps and/or prices at ridiculous levels, all this speed is pointless and will never be a realistic replacement for home use.

I was less impressed with the router. I couldn't manage to get it to talk to an SMTP server, and it was a throughput bottleneck, never achieving more than 14 megabits through the cradlepoint, despite being much faster connected to a PC. However, I didn't need (or even want) throughput at 50+ megabits per second, because I had a 10GB cap for the event, I just wanted low latency with enough bandwidth to not bottleneck anything, and 14 megabits was more than enough.

The speed is nice now, but if they attempted to roll this out en masse especially as some sort of "replacement" for wireline that performance would dip quite a bit.

I also couldn't care less with how expensive it is especially with the big 3 and how pathetic the caps are. Fine if you're on a phone doing practically nothing but that's about it.

From Bell's website (Flex plan, you pay for what your usage is that month):
22$/mo for 0-100MB
42$/mo for 100MB-2GB
62$/mo for 2-5GB
82$/mo for 5-10GB
102$/mo for 10-15GB
If your usage exceeds 15GB/mo, there is a charge of 10$/GB

Roger's Flex plan is similar, but more expensive:
22$/mo for 0-100MB
37$/mo for 100-500MB
52$/mo for 0.5-2GB
72$/mo for 2-5GB
92$/mo for 5-9GB
Overage is 5$/0.5GB

But they're running a promo of 0-10GB at 52$/mo and 10$/GB overage.

LTE latency from Rogers in Ottawa is pretty much all over the place, sometimes its nice, sometimes it's in the 150-200 range. I actually tether my desktop to my iPhone5 for LTE whenever I have to upload large amounts of data since it's insanely faster than the shitty cable upload speeds from Rogers.

We have two desktop computers and no 'smart' phones or ipads, etc.

Can this lte service be used with just a desktop computer?

I have the impression from reading here and at the Rogers site, that I would buy or lease a device of some kind with a plan of some kind. Does this plug into a router the way my dsl modem does, or would we be required to buy a smart phone that we do not need or want?

If it works with a desktop, it sounds like it might be a good alternative to dsl.

AHHH maybe the Mayans were right, the world is coming to an end, someone posted in the TSI forum... oh no!!

These "people" that seem to "think" it's ok to post whatever they want posted here to get specific users input that have technical knowledge. I also do not browse other parts of DSLR. I posted here for thoughts, opinions on LTE and to discuss the differences in speed with LTE and our current wired solutions.

Next time don't reference it so ignorantly.

This isn't a general forum. It is a forum about TSI. There are others that can be used to discuss things not related to TSI. What's the point of even having sub-forums anyway? DSLR might as well just make this one big massive forum...
