Re: 3D Printers
The only ones I have any personal experience with are the Objet units - I've worked with a company called Javelin Tech out of Oakville that sells them, but they also have several set up "in-house" and can do limited print runs and one-offs. It's absolutely amazing. I was there for a training class in related technologies (Solidworks) and another customer was having parts printed so I actually got to watch the process one time - the printers were NOT fast by any means - when you are building the part layers micron by micron it's slow going. One print job started on Tuesday morning and finished late Wednesday afternoon - but the part was made of multiple materials (the Objet Connex 500 can print up to 14 different materials in one print job! It's crazy!) and was quite large.
We will likely be utilizing them again in the very near future to get some complex parts that eventually will be machined from stainless steel printed out in plastic so we can test the fit, functionality, clearances, plumbing and wire routing, etc... I can get a part that is $20,000 machined in stainless printed for a few hundred $ - so if it's not quite right we can modify and reprint a few times before it's sent to the machine shop.
Just can't talk my boss into spending $200,000 to buy us one for R&D.
