is it dying? certainly not. But it is declining.

Dying would indicate it was owned by EA and due to shut down.

Everquest for example is still up and running.

But every MMO starts to decline and WoW is what now? almost 10yrs old. That is damn good for a video game, most games out there have a spotlight time of a few months and then are forgotten by all but the fans.

I was searching for something else related to Ultima Online and stumbled upon this video by Markeedragon.
*edit* Forget the video link:

Somewhere in the video [unsure of exact time] he talks about how Origin felt that the game would be a success with just 10k subscribers. At it's height it had just over 250k. Considering back then the game was on dial up and internet service was metered, that was huge.
Markeedragon also talks about how UO lacked levels, and gear per level. Also about how he "liked" the PK action in UO. It's an interesting video, but it also gets boring.

So going by that, if UO only needs 10 to 50k subscribers to keep it a float, what is the lowest amount WOW can get to before having to switch off servers?

Sure they'd have to fire a bunch of people along the decline, but I'm kinda curious as to how low the base would go before they [Blizard] flipped the switch.
Also, if/when Blizzard abandons WOW, be interesting to see if players recreate the server software so they can keep playing the game. Kind of like what happened to EA's space sim game Earth and Beyond. Ea shut it down, a few years later players released a server to run the game on.
Are there "unofficial" WOW servers? I never looked. I know there are "a few" UO "unofficial" servers. I don't know why EA doesn't shut them down, but they don't and UO unofficial servers have existed for years.

There are tons and tons and tons of "unofficial WoW" servers. Very easy to set one up. I didn't know much about computers and I set one for fun once to see how it was like to be GM. I could also create my own items using mysql too. Awesome stuff.

.die
.rez
.additem anything I ever wanted.

Had my friend join so we could have a GM battle. LOL. It was crazay.

Interesting.
So then WOW could exist when/if blizzard dumps it.

I ran across a well-written article about what the writer believes will be a continuing down trend. What he says is basically what I've indicated for quite some time now, but he tosses around some possible numbers. I, on the other hand, have done very little research and base way too much on gut instinct.

As far as the unsanctioned servers go, I don't believe they'll continue to hold the attention of the masses as the official game servers continue to decline. Not only are they "illegal," but nobody's going to be able to use them to come up with enough new content to keep WoW afloat when its reign comes to term.

As far as the unsanctioned servers go, I don't believe they'll continue to hold the attention of the masses as the official game servers continue to decline. Not only are they "illegal," but nobody's going to be able to use them to come up with enough new content to keep WoW afloat when its reign comes to term.

The illegal UO servers rolled back to "classic" UO. At one time UO was just one land. Where players had to be on their toes 100% of the time, or they could find themselves killed by other players and their stuff looted. Stuff they spent a lot of time hunting for [maybe if UO did what exists in WOW, meaning players can't loot other players], then the need for what UO did wouldn't have existed.
What they did was "mirror" the world. One side was twisted and blighted. That was the anything goes side. The other side was green and full of life, that was the PvE side.
After that went into effect, many fled UO. And soon illegal servers were popping up that claimed to run "classic" or "second age" based servers.

So players that like the vanilla version or burning crusade, maybe happy with just that content. Also, at least in the UO illegal servers, they have been able to inject new items, skill sets into the game. So, sure you wont get a major change, like on an official server, but there can still be changes.
Also, Earth and Beyond was abandonware by EA. The people that rezzed the game claim they have a few hundred to a few thousand players on it. Not bad for a "dead' game.
So as long as there are fans that want to play, the game should be existing for years after Blizzard pulls the plug. Unless Blizzard wants to take the time and money to fire off a bunch of cease and desist letters.

Even so, truly, World of Warcraft will be dead as soon as Blizzard pulls the plug. UO might go on until it, too, doesn't advance for too long, but it's not REALLY WoW.
