Kelowna, B.C., dubious winner as drunk-driving capital of CaWhat the ??? Is it everyone in that small town drinks? Or Cops have nothing else to do and catch these drunks with massive R.I.D.E programs? And where is the heck Toronto in that list? And Ottawa or Montreal? Do they lump these weed smokers as drunks? » www.thestar.com/news/can ··· f-canadaRoad trip-ups The top 10 cities with the most impaired-driving offences were, in order: Kelowna St. Johns, N.L. I think if remove the "summer visitors" from the list Kelowna's rating would drop through the floor.

People see in the news the misery caused to the families of the persons maimed and killed by drunk drivers, every day, yet they never learn. The Courts always finds excuses for them. I was in my Municipal court, the other day, when a man, with 10 previous DUIs received a one months suspension for his eleventh. Big deal. He smiled as he left the Court. |

In no way defending the drunk drivers but how much is due to enforcement? How many road blocks are run in other provinces? Having four in the top ten from BC yet two other provinces have higher offences for drunk drivers skews ones perspective. |

The last time I drove under the influence was 1979. It was about 3 AM and as I drove through an intersection in downtown Ottawa I realized that I didn't know what the colour of the light was. I vowed then and there to never drive under the influence again and to become a better driver. Lucky for me there were no other cars at that intersection. Sometimes when I meet friends for lunch at a place I have to drive to I limit myself to one mug of beer over the lunch period of about 90 minutes. But I don't even do that anymore. I and all my friends only walk to local bars and restaurants or drink at someones local house. Because of the rip off prices of booze in bars and restaurants hardly anyone I know will buy booze in these places anymore. Buying your own and drinking at home or a friends place is about one quarter of the cost of buying booze in a bar.

We have millions of thousands of summer visitors here, tens of thousands of them are "permanent" summer residents who own property here from the wild-west-drunk-driving-is-a-speeding-ticket USA, yet drunk driving isn't very much of an issue compared to other areas of Canada. |

Remember, Gone, BC is the province that made headlines across Canada when they passed the toughest DUI laws in the country. BC runs a TON of roadblocks year round. I truly believe we catch more because we check more and those numbers are a result.

It is not the same as impaired driving. The part about enforcement kind of makes sense though. If you're trying to screw people over with 0.03, you're bound to find more people who blow over 0.08. |

It is a tourist problem and if any of you had visited you'd know that. This is like a college town in the summer and even at the resorts in the winter............. I wasn't surprised at the results, cause I drive here everyday. Keep the fucking Albertan cowboys home and we'll be better off. |

Haha, that excuse doesn't fly when you're attempting to argue this with someone who lives in the busiest and most-visited tourist region in the country that isn't even a blip as far as impaired driving charges goes. A more reasonable explanation is that whatever police service serves Kelowna is bloody gung-ho about RIDE checks and, as a result, simply catches more people. |

I'm pleased to see that Ottawa is a the bottom of the chart, according to this cbc.ca article on the Statscan numbers. I wonder if it has to do with now having TWO Operation Red Nose teams in operation in December (one for each side of the river) and the growing popularity of both services like Responsible Choice (commercial service like ORN) and towing companies that will take your car home for you for slightly more than a cab fare. |

Responsible Choice is probably the predominant factor. There are a percentage of people who will drive regardless of the penalty or whether there is a ride check simply because they need their vehicle in the morning. Here in the Peterborough city and county the OPP will pull people over indiscriminately if you are out driving in the evening or night whether you are displaying any signs of impairment or not. There is a comparable company to Responsible Choice here that has driven thousands of people home and no doubt kept our numbers here low as well. |

That's what ORN, Responsible Choice and towing companies are doing: take driver and car home. The latter two are 'for profit', but the cost is less than two taxi fares (ie/ home and back to get the car the next day). |

I read what you said, there's no need to repeat. The groups that I were referring to take you and your car home the same night. In other words, you have your car in the morning. |

So then why would needing their car in the morning be an issue? I was going to comment about educating people on the availability of these services if they didn't know they exist, but I figured that much was a given. Guess not. |
