GV is not available in Canada yet

One can work around that. Get a virtual US phone number (i.e., IPKALL), a voip phone client (3CXPhone or other) for your computer or smartphone, and feed GV into that. Unless the business doesn't allow US area codes in their system, you're good to go.

Another alternative: Get a burner phone and give out that number. You can choose to turn it on or just check voicemail on a regular basis to make sure you don't miss a call you actually need to know about. It costs a few bucks but if one is that upset over being disturbed by phone calls then it's worth the outlay.

If you want your cable fixed, don't give them your home number if you won't be there. CSR's never put your alternate number somewhere where we can see it in the field.

That doesn't exactly work lol. My cable company has my home phone number because they supply my home phone number. And my internet connection for that matter.

Yes it does, tell them your number on your account is not that

No it does not. Did you not read my posts? I have told them multiple times to not call my house, and have given them my other numbers every time I call in. Why are you arguing with me?

Some phones can be set to transfer a call when you aren't there. Possibly try that.

I have this problem as well. Call to get the cable fixed, tell them to BE SURE TO CALL CELL because I'm at work and I'll come meet them....no call. I have to reschedule. Get home and there's a message on the machine. Same thing with the doctor's office, every single time, even after I tell them every single time no one will pick up that phone. I honestly think people are too lazy to make another attempt. If somebody picked up, they might have to work.

Companies calling home phone during work hours and expecting an answer.

WTF is up with that? I've noticed it's getting more and more common.

In most cases, I've given them both my home and work phone numbers, yet they insist on calling my home phone during work hours.

What's the point of giving my work phone number if they never call it?
