Ask the Amish. They believe only in the necessity of children learning how to read, write, and do basic math. In most states with a major Amish population, school attendance is only compulsory through the 8th grade. In a number of states, they are allowed to operate their own schools (normally one-room) using their own teachers and techniques, with only limited state requirements and supply of curriculum. It's a compromise, in some cases worked out only after major legal battle over the conflict between 'cumpulsory education' and the religious beliefs of the Amish.
