These threads always lead to the conclusion that you have two main choices for bath fans. Units that have the fan motor in the housing (like the Nutone or Panasonic fans already mentioned), or quiet inline fans that are quieter and have the advantage that they can be mounted further away from the bathroom space in the attic. The Panasonic fan owners like them, and I believe they are good due to the consistent endorsements here. I am from the inline fan camp and retrofitted (by removing the fan) my old enclosure to use a Fantech inline fan kit and avoided any unnecessary drywall work by doing so. Simple.
