[BC] V1000h and Unblockus.comSince dear ol' Telus will not allow any changes to this modem's DNS settings, a service like unblockus.com is very difficult to use. I want to be able to change dns settings on my router so that by using unblockus it can appear to all devices at my house that I'm in the US, not Canada. I have the .57 firmware package and I'm not using Optik TV. As far as I know from what I've read on this forum, I cannot achieve my goal with this Telus provided Actiontech V1000h device. But what if I substituted my own DSL Gateway instead, something like the Linksys X2000. Would that work? |

It says Verizon because I happened to be in the US when I posted.
So once again... does anyone know if I can substitute a different DSL Modem/Router for the V1000h and thereby gain control over the dns settings that Telus doesn't allow me to otherwise? |

You can always put another gateway in front of the Actiontec, and configure the DNS settings on that one. You'll be double-NATting, but that doesn't cause too many issues. With dd-wrt, you can pull up a history of your WAN traffic usage, so if they start ubb, you'll know how much of your traffic is non-optik. Ok. Since I'm not using Optic TV, can't I just dispose of the Actiontec altogether? Two gateway's would be a little much. |

The Actiontec is going to be your modem unless you have ETTS or GPON. No way around using it if you're on DSL. |

I genuinely appreciate all the suggestions I'm getting.. but I'm getting a little confused. The bottom line is this. I don't like the Telus-supplied V1000h because I cannot change it's DNS settings. Why can't I simply disconnect it, put it back in it's box, and then substitute any retail-purchased Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router such as the Linksys X2000 for instance. » home.cisco.com/en-eu/pro ··· ys/X2000Since Telus does not even offer their Optic TV in my area, that is not a consideration at all. The only thing I am buying from them is DSL. Thanks in advance. |

Do you NEED the DNS really changed in the router? If all you need is one computer to use unblock-us, then change the DNS settings in just that one computer. All other devices will still use the DNS from the router.
This I do on my computers. Router is set to Telus DNS. My Linux PC uses OpenDNS. My laptop uses my company's DNS through VPN. My Asterisk server uses the router DNS. And so on... |

Yes, you are correct d25m03p. And I have indeed changed DNS settings on just one computer in order to use unblockus as you suggest. But I also have a Roku and a Kindle Fire HD. DNS cannot be changed on either device. That's why I would like to be able to change the DNS settings at the Modem/Router instead. |

I've entered unblock-us into my actiontec Modem.
I used the cfw .33
You have to turn on telnet fuctions, then telnet into the router and set the dns to what you want. Search around to find out how. It's in the forums and on google. |

Telus does offer Optik in most of Parksville.. but not on my street. I keep checking with them every 6 months or so on when it might be available. The only thing they have to say about it is that it won't be anytime soon. What's surprising about that is that Shaw offers both Cable TV and 50Mbps broadband on this same street. You would think that Telus would get off their butt and do something to compete with that. All they offer is 15Mbps DSL. |

Your idea would be the easiest solution. The reason I haven't attempted this is because of the mixed results I have read from others on this forum who attempted bridging the V1000h and ended up screwing up everything. Perhaps those who did have problems bridging just didn't know what they were doing. In any case.. I would now like to go ahead and try it. Correct me if I'm wrong.. but doesn't bridging the V1000h require the assistance of Telus? And just how enthusiastic can I expect them to be about helping me do this? |

Bridging is unsupported as the default Telus firmware on the Actiontec does not allow it. Telus won't help you install the unsupported third party firmware either.
As for Unblock-Us, I ran into a problem with it's DNS settings on my Cisco router. For whatever reason my Android tablet gave a lot of errors after loading the Netflix app when trying to connect through Unblock-Us. After pulling the custom DNS off my router and adding it to the advanced settings on my tablet directly, it worked fine. Not sure if the Kindle Fire HD will have the same issue. |

Thanks for the info Mike_C and Sindows7. Telus pushed it's .57 FW into my V1000h some weeks ago. Safe to say that bridging is not possible with that in place. So if I try loading the hacked fw package that Sindows recommends, and things don't go well, is there a chance that I might brick this thing? Jeepers. It shouldn't be this difficult to simply gain the ability to set your own DNS. What a nightmare. A brand new Actiontech DSL Gateway can be purchased for $59 from Amazon. I'm confused. I've read that others say that bridging with the .57 FW works exactly the same as with the .55 FW. Are you doing something wrong/different from the others that have gotten it to work? |

As far as I know, you cannot bridge the Actiontec V1000h with the default Telus firmware on-board. At least that seems to be the general consensus. If you know otherwise, please give us all specifics on how to do so. |

If you have the Optik package, then this router from Actiontec will probably NOT work as the Optik DSL is a VDSL, and not ADSL. |

Bummer! I did look into my Actiontec (vanilla Telus V1000H) and even in "tech" login mode, the DNS cannot be changed. However, you could attach another router to the Actiontec LAN to LAN port (use the other router as a switch and ignore the router part), switch off the DHCP in the Actiontec (using the "tech" login), and then setup and use the DHCP in the other router to allocate all the required IP addressing. This is assuming that the "other" router allows that capability. I would need to experiment with my setup at home unless someone else has done this already. |

I just checked my "other" router that I have connected to my Actiontec as described above. My "other" router is an ASUS WL-520GU running DD-WRT. The DHCP settings in DD-WRT do allow me to set up to three DNS addresses. So, to recap, my simple home network is Internet -- Actiontec (DHCP switched off) --LAN port to LAN port-- Asus (with DHCP settings giving out (currently) OpenDNS addresses). Wired and wireless (different SSIDs) connections to PC's, tablets, printers, smartphones, etc. are handled by both routers. Hope that this can help you. |
