I am located in SouthEast Vermont and have been experiencing slowdown on my 3Mb DSL connection after 5PM for the last 3 months. Typically, speed is reduced to under 1Mb with a 500ms latency. Fairpoint IT has confirmed the evening network congestion (through a help ticket) but stated nothing can be done to correct the problem until the system is upgraded. So much for the "non line sharing" sales pitch. Also, customer service will not reduce my monthly charge stating connection speeds are not guaranteed! No other options for now.
All the lines into the local POP are dedicated to each end user. The POP to the central office is where sharing begins... At night time your neighbors are home and although the last leg to you is not shared the area is backed up from the POP to CO, or perhaps it's even more widespread and the CO to the network handoff...
