It wasn't the connections either, it was one of the LEDs itself that actually went open. [...] Normally LEDs don't fail open, unless they are very cheap, which these holiday lights definitely are.
Actually I'm not surprised. By making them flicker, it let them go over their limit and produce more light. There's probably more risks that they break too.
