Sometimes the lines blur. Thanks for posting this here. Most people would consider having their computer locked more a security issue than the Nigerians begging for dollars schemes. |

WOW hate to have heard this about your friend. Format Time!!!!!! exactly, If I got something like this on my PC ever. it would be nuke and pave. no point in taking chances with cleaner programs in safe mode.

One of the instructors here at work got hit by that via email just this week. Neither McAfee Enterprise or Kaspersky Rescue CD would clean it. I was able to neuter it well enough and restoring to a two week old checkpoint I was able to get the machine working again. I could just as easily reimaged the machine but felt like taking a crack at it.
The instructor readily admits he is totally computer illiterate.

At a high level, Reveton is similar to the "fake antivirus" programs that seem to be declining. This substitutes the approach to motivating the victim with something more confrontational and a programming wrinkle or two.

In the deception department, like some of the more popular fake AV families focus these look much more intimidating on the screen than at a user profile or system level. The last Reveton I looked at last month did it with one EXE and one LNK; changes to the Registry, if any, were irrelevant.
