Whoever is running this better not be in the US or US friendly nation. Faking to be the FBI is generally pretty serious of a crime.

Friend got hit by that last week.

He is not computer savy by any means but was smart enough to know this was a scam.

Typical diagnosis though..... "I went looking at some porn then the next day I had this."

One of the instructors here at work got hit by that via email just this week. Neither McAfee Enterprise or Kaspersky Rescue CD would clean it. I was able to neuter it well enough and restoring to a two week old checkpoint I was able to get the machine working again. I could just as easily reimaged the machine but felt like taking a crack at it.

The instructor readily admits he is totally computer illiterate.

At a high level, Reveton is similar to the "fake antivirus" programs that seem to be declining. This substitutes the approach to motivating the victim with something more confrontational and a programming wrinkle or two.

In the deception department, like some of the more popular fake AV families focus these look much more intimidating on the screen than at a user profile or system level. The last Reveton I looked at last month did it with one EXE and one LNK; changes to the Registry, if any, were irrelevant.
