[iPhone] Low battery sound??

When did Apple add a low battery audio alert? I had never noticed it before today. I was just on a call and heard a noise I can only describe as similar to when you turn a record player off (vinyl) and the sound slows down. I looked at my phone's display and the 10% battery warning was up. I don't usually let the battery get that low so I can't say if this a new feature.. but I've certainly never heard it before. iPhone 5 6.0.2

Mine are standard alerts, nothing special.

Here's another person who has reported hearing it. With a better description too (robot dying).

Curiously there seem to be some who have it and others that don't. I have owned in the past a 3G and a 4 and neither of them did this.

Here's someone else questioning why his phone doesn't do it but his girlfriend's does:

Interesting.

According to the posts on the subject, you have to be on a call when your battery hits 10% or you won't hear it. Interesting. I can't say I've ever experienced this myself.

I heard this many times. It happens at both 20% and 10% when on a call.
