Motorola NVG510 question

Just changed from AT&T DSL to U-Verse and received the NVG510 modem/router.

I searched and cannot find the setting to make me pingable for my line monitor.

Does anyone know?

Can't be done from the web interface.

If you wanted to root it, it's quite easy:

Escape character is '^]'.

login: admin
Password:

Terminal shell v1.0
Copyright (C) 2011 Motorola, Inc. All rights reserved.
Motorola Netopia Model NVG510 Wireless-N ADSL AnnexA Ethernet Switch
Running Netopia SOC OS version 9.0.6 (build h2d21)
ADSL capable
(admin completed login: Admin account with read/write access.)

NOS/xxxxxxxx> config

Config Mode v1.3

NOS/xxxxxxxx (top)>> set conn name "WAN" icmp-echo-drop off
NOS/xxxxxxxx (top)>> val

    Validation passed!
NOS/xxxxxxxx (top)>> save

Configuration data saved.
NOS/xxxxxxxx (top)>> q

NOS/xxxxxxxx> q
Goodbye.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Thanks!

You say it's quite easy.

It looks very complicated to me.

I may give it a try over the wekend.

Thanks again for responding.

Yeah, rooting isn't exactly easy, but once it's rooted making it pingable is.

Also, remember, rooting your modem invalidates your warranty. So, I would imagine, if ATT finds out, they charge you to replace the modem, since they will most certainly blame any failure on that, even if it has nothing to do with it.

Everything worked up til the login

When I telnet, I get to the login and type "admin"

However, I can't enter a password. I type and nothing appears.

Is it me, telnet or has this been disabled?

It's not SUPPOSED to echo anything for the password! Type your password and hit [enter]...

thanks!

The password was the device access code.

Okay let's see if it worked.

Update:

It is working. The line monitor is recording the pings.

That's why I love this place. Members will always step up with answers. Thanks again.

AT&T had to replace my defective modem with a new NVG510.

When I rooted the modem, I received the following message:

0K 100% 1.63 MB/s

07:58:55 (1.63 MB/s) - `/tmp/backdoor.sh' saved [203/203]

Error: cannot open device: Device or resource busy
PFS: try again to open '/dev/pfs'
Backdoor telnet on port 28 enabled! Please reboot device
sh: errr: not found
HTTP/1.0 302 Found
Location: /cgi-bin/update.ha
Pragma: no-cache
Content-Type: text/html

and it appears I cannot change the value when I telnet port 28.

I get this:

login: admin
Password:
Axis/xxxxxxx> config
nsh: config: command not found
Axis/xxxxxxx> set conn name "WAN" icmp-echo-drop off
Usage: set OBJ.ITEM VALUE
Axis/xxxxxxx> val
Validation succeeded!
Axis/xxxxxxx> save
Saving the database (to config.xml)...
Axis/xxxxxxx>

any help would be appreciated.

That root hack now uses nsh and not the normal shell. I'm not that familiar with nsh, but try:

set conn[2].icmp-echo-drop off
val
apply
save
