Re: [CFL] Turbo/Lightning speed upgrade in CFL???

said by Cisco Kid :

To ispalten.......Upgrade added $5.00 more a Month to your Bill?

Going from 45+ to 60+...can you honestly say you see a difference? Seems to me once you past a certain Dn Speed it is no longer "How Fast", it more How Many can be using service at the same time and not affect speed of all users

Only if you are talking about browsing in which case that threshold is much lower than that. Lightning isn't intended for casual browsers and maybe a file now and again....those who benefit from Lightning already have applications or needs that will take advantage of such speeds without browser restrictions.

Like Gary said, not everyone will benefit by the speed increase. Not even sure we will. We do have 2 W8 computers on with some Live Tiles active (sucking up both CPU and iNet), and 2 iPad's with an occasional Home Theater connecting. I'll watch BHN TV on the iPad often, and my wife will play on-line with the iPad and the computers usually are on too. D/L'ing files is 'iffy' as it probably depends more on the server than the connection speed. I do get down some news group headers and I noticed a 20% speed improvement there, but time wise it isn't significant. I expect the main benefit to us will be streaming and file d/l's on servers that can match the connection speed.

iPad3 Speed test w/BHN
Well, I *can* tell you the iPad's ARE faster updating! Significantly so.

I always had a slower speed on them (iPad 2 and 3) and I was told it was due to the antennae arrangement. I've got 2 speed test apps (yes Gary, I know, they are off the BHN grid, but one indicates it isn't?) and they would be around 12 - 15Mbps on one and less than 30Mbps on another. Well tonight my wife said to me the updates are really coming in fast. On her iPad2 I tested the speed (on 2.4Ghz wireless of course) and on one it 31Mbps and 46Mbps on the other.

Above you'll see my iPad3 test on what appears to be BHN, I never got over 30Mbps before on the app and it was not reliable, it bounced all over, now it seems solid?

So I might be seeing some surprising added speed I didn't expect? Should help the ESPN and BHN TV apps as well and HBO and MAXGO, which in the past have had pixelation or what I'd call lower resolution (especially ESPN).

My question went unnoticed and still unanswered. Just re posting it.

...So how much more is Lightning now if you want to install new services? I know back then it was $15 more for Lightning if you had turbo, so now it will be $20?

I am confused a bit, People that had Lightning before will be paying more to get 60Mbps when new subscribers will be paying less (no extra $5) ?...

You mean they are now giving the modem away for FREE, as opposed to those of us that had to pay $50.00 for the new modem when lighting was first offered.....geez!

Well I got an email offer from BHN and filled out the info requested, not sure how long it will take them to bump me from 40->60

You never paid $50.00 for the modem The install fee had nothing to do with the modem. As for upgrading you to rr60 I can do that right now...open a direct forums thread with your request and your IP address. If you respond quickly I'll do it tonight otherwise in the morning.

No it wasn't. You didn't already have lightning when you upgraded to it.

OK we'll do it your way....what was the money for, was told on the phone I to pay to get the new modem, and pay I did...which by the way was installed by a clueless dork. He got out of his car, swapped out modems, did a speed test and I got even lower speeds than I had before he "upgraded" my modem. He called the Office, they tried to blame my 2 brand new Dell XPS core i7....but then his laptop couldn't do it either. He left it that, took a check from me (I was pissed) Two days later I found the manual for the modem and found out what the lights on the modem meant, problem was the channel weren't...called the Office myself and they fixed it. What a waste of money, not roadrunner...but for the dork that came out. He didn't check any levels, as all he had was my new modem and a bill for me. In the end I was happy, but still feel I wasted $50 cause I DIDN'T need him to plug a modem in.

Anyway that is in the past. So when are we getting 100mb?

That was the install fee and covered of course installation and setting up your wifi/wifi devices to work with it. Had nothing to do with the hardware/modem itself You ever have another experience like that I want to know about it immediately not two years later....I can't fix that now sorry.

After keeping my eye on this forum, I decided to call BHN Sales when I noticed that I could upgrade my turbo 20M to 30M for the same price I am paying now. I was hoping they could flip the switch, but they said they had to upgrade me to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem (darn, cause I use my own Motorola Surfboard).

The good news is that the cost would be the same as what I'm paying now. The bad news is that the lady said she would have to charge me either $20 or $50 to send out a tech to have it installed; she wasn't sure of the price but would look it up. I told her that I thought they waived that fee a long time ago. She said there was a meeting today and they have to charge again to have the new modem installed by a tech.

I spoke with her supervisor to see if that fee could be waived and he said he would if I upgraded to the 60M plan for an additional $20 per month. I said an extra $240 a year wasn't worth it, but a $5 or even $10 upcharge I would consider. He said he couldn't do that...so I went on my merry way without an upgrade. Before the conversation ended I asked if the new modems could be put into Bridge Mode by the install tech so I could use my own WiFi name/password and he didn't know. After putting me on hold for around 5 minutes, he came back said yes it could be done; but he didn't sound too reassuring.

My questions are:

1) Is there a fee again to have your modem upgraded (so I can get 30M instead of 20M for the same price?
2) Can the new modem have the built in WiFi disabled or put into bridge so I have full control over my network's SSID and key?

Thanks so much for any advice.

NO there is no fee to come out and my apologies for the incorrect information. Please open a direct forums thread and I will take care of you.

Had a new Ubee installed today with adding BH phone. I'm under the old/grandfathered Lightning, averaging 45Mbps download, 5 upload. I can get bumped up to the 60Mbps, right? It would be $5 additional? I'm assuming there is no tech needed... When you say "direct thread" do you mean PM-(EDIT: scratch that, I see now...)?
