fiber question

So I had my fios hooked up yesterday and it works great. I was just wondering if anybody knew what the small copper wire thats inbedded in the flat fiber line is for? It appears all nicked up and broken from them trenching in the fiber and I want to make sure this will not cause any ill effects. thanks

It is a tracer wire for buried drops. If the drop ever gets cut, it is easier to locate the drop.
