[Equipment] Mediatrix 4102 between modem and router

Hi, I am experiencing IP addressing issues caused by my cable modem boot sequence.

Here is the setup:

Modem Mediatrix Router

The issue is caused by the Modem that serve an address of 192.168.100.x during its power on sequence. This address it then replaced by the WAN address when the modem is ready.

For some reason, the Mediatrix stick to the 192.168.100.x address and never switch to the WAN address when the modem flap the port and serve the newly acquired WAN IP.

The only fix is to power cycle the Mediatrix and renew the IP on the Router.

Is there any way to address this issue on the Mediatrix, so that everything comes back to normal after a power failure ?

Thanks

There is no IP renewal on your device?

This is what I dont get. It should renew its IP. It is a DHCP client after all...

Have you considered doing:

Modem---> Router---> Mediatrix

and just having a Static IP address on the Mediatrix?

More secure this way, as well....

You are correct, but ...

For this to work, the modem should grant a very short lease time when it hands out 192.168.100.x, e.g. 1 minute. And, when the ATA tries to renew that lease after the modem has established an Internet connection, the modem should reject the renewal and provide the public address instead.

Of course, the ATA has to honor the short lease period and accept the new address.

You could capture the traffic with Wireshark and see exactly what is going wrong and which device is at fault, but that may be academic, since it's IMO unlikely that you could get either manufacturer to fix it.

If you want to keep the ATA between router and modem, e.g. because it is doing QoS or its NAT mapping doesn't work correctly, then IMO you should have a simple script that detects trouble and reboots the ATA. If your router has third party firmware, that may be a good place to run such a script.

I wouldn't rule out the modem either. After they lock into the cable signal, the cable modems are supposed to disconnect the ethernet connection to your device and reconnect it after a few seconds, so that the device asks for a new IP address through DHCP. Maybe that interval is too short.

In fact, the interval seems to be too short for the ATA since if I connect my laptop to the modem, I see the connection dropping (twice if I remember correctly). I am wondering if anything could be done on the Mediatrix to remediate the situation.

Thanks for your suggestion. The issue is effectively that the ata does not see the short connection drop from the modem. I wrote a script that uses snmp to interrogate the wan ip of the Mediatrix and reboot it in case of issues.

I was trying to keep things as simple as possible but this is not a big deal. The modem and the Mediatrix will be connected on a DC ups anyway for maximal runtime in case of power failure.

I will try to contact the company. It is just weird to me to encounter this kind of issue since this ATA seems to be one of the most popular one used by service providers.

I've run into the same problem, this device does not seem to deal with DHCP very well. I did end up having to move it behind my router. Never bothered to contact Media5/Mediatrix about it, it's been very stable and trouble free setup this way.

Thanks for your feedback. At least I can see that this is not an isolated issue. I can't find how to contact support anyway. I might just do that.
