Audio Encoding Software

What audio encoding software does the trick of Sam Cast Pro but it won't cost me $199? I don't care about monitoring, just want to be able to stream in mp3 and aacp to both icecast and shoutcast.

Darkice »darkice.org/

Also the shoutcast DNA plugin for WinAmp encodes for Shoutcast servers. Not sure if it works with Icecast.

Well Darkice is for Linux.

Are you going to be also running the Ice/Shout-cast servers and hosting the streams?

The reason AAC encoders are not commonly offered for free is this:

(from Wikipedia)
"a patent license is required for all manufacturers or developers of AAC codecs. For this reason free and open source software implementations such as FFmpeg and FAAC may be distributed in source form only, in order to avoid patent infringement."

The shoutcast DNA plugin for Shoutcast streams, and the Edcast standalone encoder for Icecast streams, are excellent MP3 encoders; but you may have to use a Linux source-code version - or paid software - encoder for AAC streams.
