Sens sign Clarke MacArthur. 2 yr. $3.25m per

while i didn't mind MacArthur, i'm glad the Leafs didn't offer him that kind of money...that's at least $1 million/year too high for him...i wish him luck though, as i do like him.

My thinking as well. Not a bad player, but too much money for him.

I still can't believe Holland would make that deal with Alfredsson unless Zetterberg and the other Swedes had some input........totally unlike his other great moves.

Dumb,dumb.

not dumb at all...Alfredsson can still play the game and contribute...perhaps there is a secret inside move by Bettman to help bolster some divisional rivalry in the upcoming season which will see Detroit come back to the Eastern Conference...follow the money (ratings).

very different players though...you can get "MacArthur" style players for sub $2 Million easily..."Clarkson" style players are much harder to come by, hence the higher price tag to acquire him.

So am I............there has to be something behind this ,that we don't know.

He was a king in Ottawa,he could just float for his last year with no problem or criticism and then retire...............now he's a traitor, mindboggling.

When is the 1st game that Detroit visits Ottawa?

Not the same -- there was never a serious call from the fanbase for the player to allow their NTC to be waived for assets because it was for the good of the team (ie/ screw what you want, give us what we want). Big, BIG difference.

Sad to see Alfie go, and I think there is a lot more to the story than what was just said on the Detroit conf call, but that won't come up for a while. Uprooting his entire family to move from the west end of Ottawa to Detroit after only a few days thinking about it? I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it just seems a bit light on details.

i know the details and specifics are different, but the "sense of betrayal" is the same...that is what i meant.

that said, Bobby Ryan may make you forget all about it quick enough...i haven't seen much of him as he has been on the left coast all this time.

great pick up though.

On our local sports it was mentioned the Senators hope to keep their salaries at 50 million due to financial problems with the Sens....

according to reports (including Alfredsson's own words), his decision was a selfish one...why he thinks his chances are better with Detroit vs Ottawa, i don't know...i agree with Kardinal (?) that this is more of a sideways move.

The goal of a professional hockey player is to win the Stanley Cup. Don't know why after carrying the Sens for 17 years, he decides to go with a team he believes has a better shot is a "selfish" move.

keep in mind, the word "selfish" was his own words...in terms of why it would appear that way, he was the face of the franchise, the current longest standing captain in the league and has spent his entire career there...that is why it is seen as "selfish", which he himself admits (and said).

people often complain about "corporate loyalty" being non-existent...this is why, because it doesn't exist from employees either.

I'd reserve my judgement maybe until there is an explanation from Bryan Murray on how things went... He's known for being honest and upfront, so it will be interesting what he has to say about the process and what went wrong.

After hearing both Alfredsson and Murray's pressers...YEP Alfredsson is dead to me

They are already over that (slightly) with two RFA's to sign and Murray admitting he is adding more

Exactly. There has been a lot of talk about "financials", when it's really an internal budget for a number of reasons. There are going to be a number of contracts coming up in the next few years (players moving off EL, Spezza, 9MM, now Bobby Ryan, etc) that will need increases, so paying to the cap now means depending on big increases in it to be able to keep all the young talent the team now has.

Also, a lot of the "money problems" talk seems to be based on the OBJ article from a while back where Melnyk talked about limiting or cutting off investement in Ottawa after the announcement that the casino could only be at RCR. He had been planning a proposal for one out by the CTC and has been basically cut off at the knees by the mayor. Eugene is a passionate guy, sometimes a bit half-cocked, but he has a LOT of drive (one doesn't become a billionaire without it) and doesn't take setbacks very well.

Wiercioch and Condra still have to be signed, and I wouldn't be surprised to see another top 6 forward or top 4 defenceman signed.

I may stand alone on this but Alfie made a good move and he didn't screw us over like Sundin did the leafs by refusing trades the leafs desperately needed.
I can't imagine anything but applause when Alfie returns with his new team. He had a great run, but it's time to move on and let someone else step up for the Sens.

Yup, and it's not a non-stoplight drive to the arena anymore either. To be anywhere nice in Detroit you've got to be pretty far out, and the arena is right on the water in downtown, so you have to drive through the less-than-lovely areas every day. And find good schools and hockey programs etc for the kids. It's going to be a shock to see a city like that after living here, to be sure.

if the family lives in Ottawa, they should just stay there...Detroit has turned into one of those post apocalyptic cities you see in movies...when the Government has come in to take over the city, you know things are bad.

Alfie made a questionable move...he did it for himself, and he is certainly "allowed" to, it's his life...but i don't understand his thinking that the Red Wings are a step up...in fact, if the Sens stay healthy next season, i'd say the Sens are better team...even if they do get unlucky and have some injuries, the Sens are still "on par".

from what i saw on Sportscentre, a "sample" number of $4ish million was thrown out by Murray, but only in terms of "what do you want, $4 million, let us know, we want to back"...he had a higher number in mind, and decided to open the window and take a peak outside, where the $5.5 million from Detroit came from, after which point he decided he would simply go there...this is despite the fact the negotiations with Ottawa didn't even really happen and Ottawa would have easily matched that no problem...during the press conference, you can see that Murray wasn't happy that the negotiation procedure never even really got started, which is why he was so caught off guard by Alfie's decision.

and yes, Alfie did screw the Sens in the same sense that Sundin did the Leafs, in that you lose a top tier player, and team Captain, and get nothing in return...had Alfie decided he wanted to play elsewhere during the trade deadline last season, he likely would have pulled in, at the very least, a 1st round pick, likely some additional assets as well.

Sundin didn't screw the Leafs, and Alfie didn't screw the Sens. The only selfishness in seeing is from Sens fans who seem to dwell under the delusion that Alfie was under any sort of obligation to come back.
