@teksavvy.com

is TSI getting obsolete?

1) Rogers and Bell are both offering (mostly to new homes) crazy speeds over fiber that you can't get with TSI.

2) Rogers non-fiber speeds are 10x faster than TSI for upload (5x for downlaod).

I understand that the reason TSI can exist is because the big corporations are forced to allow re-sail by some anti monopoly legal thing. (and for reasons like Bell was once built on tax dollars)

So can this legal thing be applied to the faster speeds?
Is TSI pursuing this?
What is the legal/technical/financial limitation?
Is TSI SOL?

(We really don't want to abandon TSI, so give us some hope TSI)

p.s. TSI, thanks for resisting Voltage. (it's funny until you get shocked)

Which is only available in select locations right now. Who knows, things may change.

Currently waiting on a decision from the CRTC to force Rogers to provide them to TSI/non-agg TPIA providers. Its been in play since November 2012. If you want a summary, I have one here:

Concerning speeds on Cable, we are currently waiting on CRTC rulings.

As for DSL we can offer up to 25/10 if your residence qualifies for it.

I wouldn't say were obsolete.

Last time I looked at Bell, their caps are making those new speeds obsolete.

Bell/Rogers don't offer unlimited. TekSavvy does. I can use my 25/10 connection as much as I want and never have to worry about bankruptcy.

TekSavvy offers non-fiber upstream speeds of 10 Mbps, so I don't know where you get your "Rogers is 10x faster" thing from.

I wouldn't mind paying for fibre, but I don't think everyone's going to pay $225 a month for it.

i'm pretty sure only 10 houses qualify for new rogers fiber services, it's basically only their for epeen and for people to think they're better than bell.

I dont think so. The reason we exist is because there is Market Power. i.e. not enough competition. Even if FTTP or fiber as you put it is pervasive... there would still be Market Power...

I asked the very same thing in my speech at the ISP Summit a few months back.

Here is my speech:

»blogs.teksavvy.com/2012/11/06/th···y-story/

In it I ask when FTTP access will get dealt with.

thanks on the Voltage stuff. tough pill for all of us.

Thank you both for the replies.

Is there some kind of deadline as to when the CRTC must make a decision by?

Is there guess as to how long it will take if the decision is in our favour for TSI to be able to offer said speeds?

Yes I know unlimited TSI was sweet but some might suffer a 250GB cap just to have the faster speeds.

And if you are stuck on 0.8mbps up, you could never get over that cap in a month anyway(on the crazy assumption you only upload, no downloading)

I was comparing cable(150/10) to cable(28/1) speeds as a lot of users are still stuck on a DSL(6/0.8) from Bell while other locations get fiber(175/175).

I would love to pay TSI for (25/10) but it's not offered here.

Yes that's a lot but if I wanted 10 up it would be $123 from rogers and $390 from from TSI (13 mlppp s) because the vdsl(25/10) is not offered here ... if you could do mlppp over TSI cable it would be $325.

If they were going to release it before teh UBB/AVP/CBB decision, I think it probably would have been released by now.

Its looking now like they msy be releasing it with the main decision, as its essentially requesting enforcement of speedmatching under that decision.

No clue how long it'd take TSI to offer. But Start got the decision Dec 21 for agg, and they've just started offering the new speeds. So, 3-4 weeks?

Thanks for the Start example.

Do we expect the "main decision" sometime this year?

Could be any day now. But it's been "could be any day now" for a few months, so it doesn't necessarily mean it will be any day now.

Didn't TSI say it might take up to several months?
