Re: is TSI getting obsolete?

In many ways TSI is ahead rather than obsolete on many fronts in comparison to the major telcos. Net neutrality, caps (offering unlimited where others have hard caps only), pricing (insomuch as is allowed under the regulatory environment in Canada), large and growing customer base (compared to peers), and internal hardware. If they could offer the more advanced speed tiers of the majors (which appears to be coming soon pending the CRTC) they would I'm sure because they would need to to remain competitive in the marketplace. So I wouldn't say there is any hint of obsolescence regarding TSI. If anything they lead most of the indies.

Agreed, but if the CRTC rules against them or delays indefinitely they will have a hard time competing for users seeking speed.

Will they? TSI sells 28/1 cable in Ontario for $46.95 per month, but Rogers 45/4 is going for $71.99... The higher in price you go, the smaller the portion of the market that is interested in it.

At my peak I was paying what, $120+ a month for internet? It was great to have that kind of speed, but the cost was painful even to me, who puts way more importance on internet speed than your average Joe.

what can you get with faster speed?

I browse webs all the time. Fast speed does not get me anything extra. It is the servers' speed that count.

The only real time speed counts is when I download a huge file from somewhere which offers a strong and speedy file server. If not that extra speed you get serves no real purpose.

I am on the lowest tiers with teksavvy offers and I am happy since I am paying the least yet my practical surfing speed is as much as the top-tiers users.

to be honest 225.99 for 500gb dl cap.. it should be atleast 1-2TB or unlimited at that price.

TSI is far from obsolete.

1) Amazing customer service compared to Bhell/Robbers
2) Unlimited data transfer
3) Fewer limitations on what you can do with your connection

The CRTC is always behind the curve which puts TSI at a disadvantage for new speeds. In all honesty though, servers aren't up to the task of meeting those speeds (yet) and in many cases they have artificial limits built in to keep 1 user from "hogging" all the upstream.

Think about it though, what great advantage does speed give you? P2P is the only thing that can really take advantage of it but with such tiny caps on data transfer P2P is pointless. There are other things that can as well but few that the majority of consumers will use.

The only area TSI could improve is pricing and initial setup... that is largely out of their control though.

Last time I looked at Bell, their caps are making those new speeds obsolete.

You can give any man the fastest car on the planet, but what fun is it if you only have a 1km road? AKA, bandwidth caps.

Teksavvy offering Unlimited (as well as the other TPIA) makes rogers and bell obsolete. Those guys may have speed, but speed doesn't really matter when you lower caps every 6 months to limits which make those speeds pointless.

One word: billing.

The "other guys" insist you pay the bill in full, even if it's wrong, and wait a dozen weeks for an adjustment. Teksavvy just sends you a new PDF.

Agreed.... Also I find that when I really want the speed boost (new game download) I tend not to get the full speed I want because the originating server is being slammed. At this point in the game I'd rather have an 18/4 connection as opposed to the 28/1. I like to post alot of photos and it's painful sometimes.

Also too, perhaps larger cities have access to the higher speeds but here in London Bell is still only offering me a 6 megabit package based upon my postal code. Comparable packages to the cable I have with rogers have impossible bit caps. I had the flu the for the first two weeks of January. Netflix was my best friend while I laid in bed and I can't believe how much data I went through... Even on a 300 gig package I'm now conserving for the rest of the month because of what I went through.

Again, what does what you said have to do with the OP ? Are you trolling or trying to flame him. Seems that's all you do, troll/flame.

OP thanked TSI, leave it at that, don't pick an argument over nothing with him.

It is pretty crazy how much without even trying you can blow through it eh? We use Netflix as cable has been gone for 4 years now and if we had a cap, between Netflix and regular use we'd be broke paying overage fee's each month

I had to drag my future mother in law kicking and screaming away from Rogers. I cut her monthly bill by almost 2/3rds (mostly overage fees) and all the "our internet isn't working, can you take a look at it" calls stopped.

This is true but the curve moves (% of people using dial up by choice is small)

TSI: 28/1 $47
Rogers: 25/2 $48

An extra $1/month for 2x the upload speed sounds like a good deal (if you ignore how awesome TSI is in other aspects) (assuming DSL is not an option.)

said by vientito1:

You could upload a 1080p video to youtube, or use an online backup service like backblaze, HD video chat with someone, etc. The list only gets longer as technology evolves.

Well for those that have access to "10mpbs up" over the phone lines that's good for now, but in my case old slow Bell hardware limits TSI offering to "0.8mpbs up" and rogers limits TSI to "1mpbs up" while offering me "10mpbs" up just because they can (so far).

Waiting for CRTC....

I'd love to live-stream my raids..
Would also be nice to be able to upload videos to facebook, and have it take less than 30 mins for a short clip.
