03 impala idle issues

Having issues on idling not sure what it is.

Might be a bad TPS. I've seen that type of behaviour before with a bad one. Try disconnecting it and see how it runs on the default parameters.

had it checked out by my mechanic.

It was loose wire was causing a misfire on one cylinder.

$35 repair. he also checked the other connections as well..

unfortunately it started happening again. Not as bad though.

really killing my gas mileage getting 9 MPG city and 15MPG on the highway.

huge drop considering it took out one cylinder.
one cylinder is just a huge drag when it's not working correctly. still not getting any codes

No smoke from the tail pipe.

Have you checked the resistance of the coil pack? Any leaks on the wires?

Just trace the plug wires back. You may want to start by checking if the ends are corroded at the coils.

#5 popped off resetting did nothing though.

but it is making a popping noise from it every now and then

It sounds like there's a voltage leak to a grounding point. You may even be able to see the arc in very low light.

A light spray of water mist with a hand sprayer may also make it easier to find the ignition leak. (assuming that is what the problem is)

Yep, those are the coil packs. If 2 and 5 are the problem, pull the wires, clean the ends and the coil plugin, and then lightly coat with petroleum jelly. It's dielectric.

I would use 300 grit emery cloth, or sandpaper. It usually doesn't take much to clean them. For the coil pack, wrap it around a pencil and twirl it to clean.

That's really not bad all things considered.

'01-'05 Impalas are tanks. They are great engines as well. My 2004 currently sits near 180k and still is running like it was 50k.

I use 91 octane 87 engine knocks too much when idling and is much louder when running

everything works good now

car starts instantly in less then a second.

The engine is designed to use 87 gas. It should use 87 gas.

You may have bandaided it for now, but leaving a failing/failed part in there WILL cost you more in the long run.

knocking issue is a gas issue . there is nothing else wrong with the engine as I had it checked out. when I had the fuel regulator changed out.
Says it can run 87 or higher anyways .

mileage was 9MPG city-15MPG highway with the bad fuel regulator (before it failed I was getting 17/23mpg)

I have the 3.8L
I suspect the PCM was modified by a previous owner. Since I can run the high and low beams at the same time (this can be done by modified PCM settings. )

No, but the BCM does.

But as far as the headlights, it's just one extra wire and a relay for the switch. It's incredibly simple. No actual recoding necessary.

normally you can not run them at the same time.
