1 edit | [Poll] How reliable do you find Cable VoIP? Poll How reliable do you find Cable VoIP? |
|
I've seen a few mentions of Cable VoIP here lately. For those of you who currently use or have used VoIP from your cable company, how have you found its reliability? I realize the answer to this question will vary depending on how a cable company implemented the technology, so answer based on your experience with your local cable company.
For the purposes of this discussion, I'm referring to VoIP that is delivered over the cable company's private network and not over the internet. In other words, I'm referring to service providers like Shaw, Rogers, and Comcast, but not VoIP.ms, Callcentric, Anveo, VOIPo, etc.
Feel free to discuss! |

| I couldnt vote on your poll because I didnt find an optiion that suited my expression so here it goes....
I find it as reliable as the ISP is. Comcast xfinity is horrendous. Comcast Business is A+. -- [nUll@dcypher ~]$ |

Re: [Poll] How reliable do you find Cable VoIP? Here, cable phone service (OptimumVoice from Cablevision) is very reliable.
I still have an Optimum Voice line at my office, basically out of inertia....
I think it went down once a few years ago, they took care of it right away.

By contrast, our POTS (analog/analogue) company is Verizon.
My experiences both as a residential and business customer are that their POTS service is slip sliding away. |

 | reply to XCOM Agreed. I'll give Business Class A+++. However, on the residential side, I'll give the service an A but an F--- for residential phone customer support and repair. Reason for the F--- rating: It takes 72 hours to address / repair service issues compared to a 2 hour time frame on the business side. |

IanR join:2001-03-22 Madison, NJ | reply to Mango Both Cablevision and FIOS VOIP services as as reliable, or better, than copper POTS in my experience. Copper suffers from aging whereas fiber is newer and seems to suffer less from the elements.
I now use a separate Voip service (voipo) and that is also as reliable as anything provided directly by any cable company. And less expensive. |

 | reply to Mango I have Cable phone service for about 15 months now. Apart from a strange behaviour of our answering machine, I have not seen any other significant difference. Of course a long power outage would change that, but we have not had any of that lately. Also, the fact that it came free for two years may have helped this impression. |

My experiences both as a residential and business customer are that their POTS service is slip sliding away. The copper owned by CenturyLink is corroding away. It is really in horrible condition according to one of the CenturyLink repairmen in our area. Most people have given up on POTS except for some older seniors. And CenturyLink has no intentions to repair/upgrade. I keep getting advertisements from CenturyLink about their TV service called Prism and high speed internet (what a joke). Not possible except in a very limited area.
DSL is a joke leaving Comcast with an almost monopoly. |

LazManPremium join:2003-03-26 canada | reply to Mango I had Rogers Home Phone (the VoC offering) - the quality was excellent, incredibly reliable...
Only dumped it for cost - it's roughly the same price as traditional POTS (about $35/mth cdn) - and between the wife and I having cell's, we RARELY used it... Ending up porting the number out to a VoIP provider, just to keep the #. |

 | reply to Mango In over 20 years of POTS usage, not once did I ever go to use my phone and have it not work, or have someone tell me they had a problem calling me.
2 months after installation of Charger cable voip, I had to power cycle the voip box because people calling were just ringing but not ringing through to my phones. A week later they had to replace the unit.
Other than that Cable voip was o.k. |

 | reply to Mango Everything will be fine for months at a time then all of a sudden a problem will crop up. It may be callers not getting through at all, getting tones like they got connected to a fax machine or their call being diverted directly to voice mail even though we were not on the phone at the time, or picking up the phone for an incoming call and the call immediately dropping to dial tone. Of course, anytime the provider is contacted they always point their finger at the router. Can't be on their end. |

It tended to go out a lot quicker in power outages, and it was not because the modem lost power. I currently use Vonage over FIOS and U-Verse and U-Verse voice. Both work as long as my FIOS ONT or U-Verse gateway have backup power. |

stu join:2000-11-03 Patchogue, NY | reply to Mango I have had a number of VOIP providers over the years.
I have a POTS (verizon) line and alternate between Cablevision and Comcast Internet service.
When the verizon line goes bad it is usually due to broken copper lines or crosstalk. This usually happens during wind and /or rain storms. They fix it in a few days.
In power outages such as Sandy I used an old bell dial phone and had POTS service, no VOIP.
With cablevision the VOIP line is fast and clear as long as Internet is working.
With Comcast The VOIP is slower and is echo prone and drops sometimes. One, Phone Power, could not work and they blamed Comcast. I now use magic Jack with limited success.
With VOIP it would seem to depend strongly on the Internet provider with a blame game if it does not work.

 | reply to Mango As noted before, the quality can be excellent, and it can be horrendous. It depends on the ISP you are using, the codec the provider is using and the handset you are using. There are better companies than others out there. |

Mangowww.toao.net join:2008-12-25 Alberta kudos:11 | I'd be curious to hear of a service provider that uses something worse than G.711. Given the capacity cable companies have, that kind of bandwidth is usually negligible. |
|
 | I know many places who use GSM and G.729. 729 isnt that bad but its not 711. |
