First 2 weeks with Start....so far not impressed.Well have had Start Pro cable for 2 weeks now. Got the new speeds and the speed test is showing good numbers.
Unfortunately, that's about it for the good news. My Netflix cant stream HD (720p) video without spooling and constantly dropping HD quality. Downloads average between 200-500k on both FTP and HTTP...??
For a 45 Meg line that's pretty awful. Here's my modem numbers. Anyone having similar issues?

Can you post your speed test to different locations?
I will be very honest with you, but, very often i see that too.
I have multiple servers at different locations, and after 6 pm or so, i am unable to pull more then 5-10mbit from them (usually full speed) while speedtest shows (with speedboost) 60+mbps.
I think that i complained before about this, but, nobody even cared.
If majority is not complaining, then ............
Personally, i do not have much time as i used to have to spend at my pc, so, i am not able to monitor as i was before, so, not sure how often that is happening again.
Where about ur located? (City at least) |

Here's a few tests..

I see, so, exactly same issue i am talking about.
Well, i am "glad" that i am not the only one experiencing this.
Hopefully this time it will be looked in more.
Good luck! (for both of us and others with the same issue). |

Sorry to hear you're having problems. How is your Netflix connected and what type of device? During off peak does it maintain hd? Re drugtito sorry if I missed your original issue, certainly not that we don't care. |
|

My netflix is connected hard wired to the modem i use the pc about 4am in the morning where it is good to use no issues then but dont need it at that hour lol |

Well, the modem numbers for the downstream power are close to the bottom end limit, but not causing you any problems as indicated by the BER (bit error rate) of 0.0% on all channels.
This looks therefore like a congestion issue somewhere. |
|
|
My stats are a little better: I was thinking the same, congestion. sbrook, it couldn't be local node congestion or? Thanks |

By Netflix hardwired to modem, do you mean router? Assuming so as otherwise you'd be unplugging it to use the PC. What model? Did this just happen last night, or is this happening every, some nights, most nights? Thanks. |

Thanks Your stats are fine. It could be congestion ANYWHERE. Those speedtests look reasonable though, which tends to suggest the pipes out from Start to wherever Netflix is being served from but that's hard to say. |

I see, thanks for info sir. Hopefully rocca will have answer to this |

Well been testing pretty much every angle. Netflix was running fine up till about 7PM. Well, running at least.
Right now it's 10:30 PM and I can't sustain Netflix HD (Walking Dead) episode for more than a few seconds. Bandwidth meter reads about 2.5 mbps. Wow, not good. What is that like 1/20th capacity or something?
I would chalk it up to congestion, but we are switching from Rogers 75 meg line when we only had 4 bonded channels and I had no issues streaming 1080P and getting as much as 6000 KBS per thread. Day or night with zero congestion. What gives? |

Does Start.ca have a local Netflix caching server? (probably not) Larger ISPs (like Teksavvy) probably do, which can make for smoother streaming.
But then, many people report watching Netflix HD from the USA servers via VPN or DNS proxies, so that probably doesn't really explain anything.
With Teksavvy, I have noticed that a lot of the routes I seem to be assigned have some kind of throttle at about 5mbits/sec per connection. So to get fast file transfers, I have to use multiple simultaneous connections, aka. multi-threaded downloads. Something like that could also be the issue here with routing to/from Start.ca.
Or not.
EDIT: actually, I've noticed a lot of stuff seems slow all of a sudden on our 28/1 Teksavvy service during prime time, as of some time last week. Prior to that, we hardly ever noticed any kind of lasting slowdown. So maybe local node congestion, or CMTS congestion/overloading?
I guess I'll find out in about 10 days from now, when our service here switches over to Start.ca.
Cheers |

I would guess Local Node congestion, It makes no sense otherwise for it to be only happening during prime time as Start says they have lots of Bandwidth available Either rocca is Lieing Doubtful or Your Local Node is congested and so during prime time Whammo to your speedo P:) How are speed tests and other activitys during primetime? have you tried changing your DNS to googles open dns to see if that makes a difference? |

If it was local node congestion you wouldn't see those kind of speeds from speedtest as well. (Not even that high Speedboost).
Something else is going on. |
|
|
I tried using multi thread FTP on a file and I can max out the line using this method, so I have full capacity available here at peak time. Of course that doesn't help my Netflix stream any faster |
|
|
You might want to try setting up a HE.net tunnel.
Thats what i am using now, netflix is accepting ipv6 connections, so, since then i did not have those kind of problems with netflix, but, other stuff like ftp protocol, and few other, i see slowdowns. |

Just did a speed test, to be honest with you, never seen this high download and this low ping on my connection. usually its like 65mbps down and 25-35ms ping. Maybe rocca opened another pipe for us :P |

said by Greenalderbe:I guess my big question is if it was local Node congestion wouldn't it have affected my Rogers line in the same way? It's hard to say for sure, Rogers is doing lots of maintenance and/or a node can change it's behaviour in the matter of a couple days with a few heavy customers popping up in an apartment, etc. We did notice an across the board increased usage on Sunday (maybe everyone was streaming the football game) that was about 20% above typical, so that might have been enough to peak over local node issues. The fact that everything is fast except for Netflix though does seem odd. As for our capacity to TorIX, we just upgraded from 1Gbps to 10Gbps - we're using about 800Mbps at peak so there is a plenty of space there. Could be possible that Netflix hit capacity (or maybe just on their TorIX facing link) but then you'd imagine that lots of people would be complaining about that. |
|
|
Haha, I hear ya. I'm running fine right now too. Good things happen if you wait up late enough it seems. You might do 100 megs by midnight |
|
Greenalderbe |
It's not just Netflix. My FTP is bouncing from 5mbps to as much as 49mbps+ on one thread.
Definitely better than earlier in the day/ evening but still we are seeing this same pattern every day it seems.
Crap speeds at peak times and crazy up and down swings late night. I just don't get it.
Appreciate the effort Rocca, just a little frustrated. Think Rogers new plans are trampling the rest of us? |

It sounds like your node might have suffered some congestion, I imagine lots of their retail customers upgraded and perhaps put it over the top. One thing that we've noticed is that Rogers congestion problems don't seem to last too long, they've been pretty good with upgrades the past few months. |

If its Only at night and it Effects FTP, And netflix then its not netflix related, I would say your connection as a whole is effected just the speed test doesn;t swing the problem as its such a short duration. I would look internal - Modem router Pc Ethernet patch cord. etc.. i assume u did all this.. and i assume the issue remains but just a thought, if u want to do excessive tshooting u can ask a neighbhor or some such to let u try there line with yer modem or a friend to bring his Modem be it rogers or start the issues should be the same if they are isolated to your area etc.. The darkside of troubleshooting rofl p:) |

It's not a modem issue, or the BER (bit error rate) would be a lot higher.
Make sure that there's nobody else using your wireless (secure it) on the upstream. That would definitely impact your downstream from other than speedtests but likely leave the speedtest unimpacted. |
