 | Laptop losing charge unused I have an older Toshiba laptop with a relatively new Battery (2yrs.old). Lately I have noticed that when I leave the laptop with a fully charged battery and return to the laptop several days later, the battery is minimally charged or dead. Does this loss of a charge indicate some unknown discharging occurring while unused, or is the discharging due to the condition or state of the battery? |

 | It's probably the battery, but it's not possible to say for certain. However, there's an easy way to find out: charge it fully, take out the battery, leave it out for a week, put it back, and then check the state of charge.
Charge it up again, but this time leave the battery pack in, turn it off, and a week later turn it back on, and then check the state of charge, and post both numbers here. -- Wacky Races 2012! |

1 What operating system are you running. Pre Windows 7 OS's would kill all my batteries dead in a few days.
2 A 2 yr old battery isn't "relatively new" especially if you have an "older" laptop. After 1 year a battery begins to lose it's charge.
3 Is it possible that you bought a generic battery and not a Toshiba sanctioned battery? You get what you paid for. Granted, choosing the cheaper option and buying more than 1 battery is usually cheaper than 1 official battery from the manufacturer.
Guess what I am saying is there is probably nothing you can do about it and it sounds perfectly normal to my past experiences.

 | 1. The laptop is actually dual booting Win7 and MINT13 "Mate", with MINT the default O.S. and most used.
2. Yeah, can`t remember if this charging situation was the case when brand new?
3. I purchased a RAYOVAC battery from "Batteries Plus+" for $85 which was supposed to be an exact Toshiba replacement, along with Rayovac`s Laptop Adapter A/C charging unit.
I will try Aurgathor`s battery removal test suggestion as well, but I was just curious to determine if their might be some unaccounted for discharging going on, or whether this was "normal" for a 2 yr. old battery? |

| My CR-48 chromebook does exactly what yours does and it's about 2 yrs old..win 7 does a good job conserving battery power with sleep/suspend so I'm not entirely sure of the issue. I've put ubuntu 12.04 on 2 older laptops recently and they die rather quickly but their batteries are definitely older than 2 years. -- My signature is on strike. |
