Couple questions

Hi,

Im looking to switch to start from cogeco

Right now were using Cogeco VOIP service.. I want to switch to start but not cancel their VOIP service.. is this possible or do they go hand-in-hand?

My second question is a little bit stranger. I live in Burlington ontario so I'm in cogecoland... if I switch to start what would my routing look like to IL and NY, specifically 198.144.179.99? I understand I'd be using cogecos lines, but I'm trying to avoid bells routing as it gives me problems.. specifically 64.230.186.xxx. Would I go from cogeco to something else? As it stands I go to cogeco > bell > nlayer/etc

Yes no problem keeping Cogeco phone however you'd need an install with a second modem (ie your Cogeco modem will have to stay in order to provide the phone service) and the new modem for our service would be where you plug your router/computer into.

Looks like #2 was answered below, thanks pnear.

Thanks for the reply rocca

Would I be eligble for a transfer in this case? I know there was a link showing a guide for eligibility of transfers, I just cant seem to find it now

Thanks for the tracert sir, definitely has my hopes up as most servers I route through bell, and I believe that is my issue for delay in games (hopefully its not my local cogeco that's the issue)

Start is also supposed to be adding nLayer as a transit provider any day now so that route to the Chicago game server should become even more direct and no longer go through HE to reach Nlayer. I wouldn't expect any change in latency though since HE is already handing the traffic off to nLayer without leaving Toronto as it is.

Unfortunately since it's a second installation and a technician requires to visit then it doesn't qualify for the free transfer. The specific offer text is:

"* If you already have an existing cable internet service then you may qualify for a free transfer! The installation charge of $50 only applies to new cable internet service plans if you do not have an existing active cable internet service plan from another provider or if your configuration requires a technician to visit. Please note that 10 business days notice is required to schedule your transfer in order to take advantage of this offer."

...sorry.

For a company this well-connected they sure don't have their stuff together when it comes to turning up service.

Last question(s)

I want to call start but I don't really want to cancel my existing cogeco service just yet

Ideally I want to call start, pay for two internets for one month (overlap) to see if start actually fixes my issues. If it does, I cancel cogeco and keep start.

1) Is this possible to have service overlap? Ie both modems working at the same time.

2) What about wiring it, can it be hooked up on a split line? It seems I have one line in my office right now that the existing modem is hooked up to, it is the only device on the line. Can we split this line and install the other modem? Or does a new line have to be installed. The other cable drops are all split atleast once somewhere along the line.

THanks

If you do it as a new install then no problem overlapping as long as you want and a tech will come to install/replace the splitter, test signal, etc to ensure you have a good connection.

If you're doing it as a transfer, it will have to be for a shorter period of time, ie a couple weeks, just book your Cogeco disconnection say a month from now, place a transfer order from us for 2 weeks out and then you'll have the 2 weeks at the back end for testing. In this setup you'd have to deal with the splitters, etc for the second modem.
