[Internet] Cant surf internet when using just 10% of avail bandwI'm on Bell Sympatico, using a 2701HG-G router supplied by them. We have 8mbit down and i think 1mbit up.
For some strange reason, even though I can download at up to 1024kB/s, if am using even as little as 100kB/s in a torrent or p2p program, I can't browse http at all. Furthermore, even if I completely stop the downloading, I have to wait a full 2 or 3 minutes before http starts working again.
Is this the result of a slow/weak router that can't handle that amount of processing power? What the heck is going on here?
Thanks for any help! |

Re: [Internet] Cant surf internet when using just 10% of avail bhow many connections is your router opening? Can it handle that many? |

torrent is limited to about 30 connections, but I have no idea how many the router can handle. |

At what speed have you capped the upload in your torrent software? |

i'm confused,
here's some scenarios, can you answer them
download 90% - http? download > 1mbit, upload >90% - http? download 1mbit, upload 90%+ - http? |

oh yes forgot to mention the same occurs when uploading is at or near max, although I believe that is a commonly known limitation of asynchronous DSL.
But this ALSO occurs when downloading. I can upload at up to 50% of max bandwidth and surf http just fine. |

I'm confused by your question, don't "upload > 90%" and "upload 90%+" both mean the same thing, upload greater than 90%?
I can't browse http when downloading greater than 1mbit or uploading at 90%, or both combined. I know that uploading slows your download speed considerably, but I am confused as to why downloading at pretty much any speed stops my http from working entirely. |

weird, I had 4 scenarios, something happened.
basically,
it was the combs and perms of high upload, low upload, high download, low download |

its your 2wire modem/router combo!
I had a 2wire that did that too, soon as I switched routers the problem was fixed.
It was not just with downloading here.
If I had say 10 tabs in Firebox, that were to open up when I opened up my browser for the day. With my 2wire hooked up about 4 - 5 of the tabs would time out loading. With another router, they all loaded fine! |

thanks for the info! I wonder... how difficult would it be to use a 3rd-party modem to connect to bell? |
|
|
quite easy
I do!
you can try to set your 2wire into a bridge device and hook it through your own router. there are steps someone outlined in post here.. don't know the link off hand. i'm sure someone else will post it!
Or you can buy your own modem/router and plug in your b1 user id and password in there.
Just don't try to phone Bell for tech support with your own modem, THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU! re-hook the 2wire first. |

1) 2wire as a router sucks, use it as a modem only. (get another router, put PPPoE credentials in that router) Even with a good router though, you can't use 100kb/s upload on ADSL/adsl2+ and expect smooth sailing on the downloads
2) Ideally get something like a linksys e4200v1 that supports toastman tomato for QoS rules (w/ TC-ATM patch for ADSL/ADSL2+) if you want any chance of being able to browse comfortably while uploading.
3) Consider upgrading to VDSL (Fibe 15/10) if available in your area. |

Thanks for the info! It isn't the uploading I'm worried about though, that is a known limitation of ADSL. It is the fact that if I download at even as little as 10% of my available bandwidth, I can't do anything else. Whether I limit my torrent application to 100kB/s or 1024kB/s, I cannot browse http internet. |

I'd like to add my two cents.
First off, in all the many years I've been on DSL repair for Bell, I haven't seen this specific issue before.
If you are accurately describing your trouble, not leaving out any details, and I happened to show up at your house with a repair ticket, I would:
A) test your internet connectivity with my laptop. If I couldn't reproduce it with my laptop, but your PC continues to show symptoms then it'd be your PC. If my laptop behaved similarly....
B) replace modem and repeat A. If it solves it great. If not...
C) change xSLAM
Is the behavior the same on wired or wireless? |

We have 1 wired PC and 2 wireless laptops, the issue is the same on all 3 of them. no idea what xSLAM is though. |

if it only slows down during torrent/p2p (regular http downloads don't hurt your connection)
then it's the 2wire who's known issue is it can't handle many connections at once
You can try disabling some of the firewall/intrusion detection features on the 2wire, but you're only delaying the problem
pretty sure this will resolve itself if you're using another router (2wire only as a modem) |

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention the very important fact that this problem only occurs with torrent downloading; I can use up to 60% of my available bandwidth on http downloading and still browse http comfortably. Not as good as I would expect (shouldn't I be able to use up to 90%/900kB/s and still have 100kB/s, plenty enough for http?), but much better than torrents. I tried disabling the anti-hack features on the 2wire that someone else suggested to disable, but it didn't help at all. We have another very nice router up and ready to go, all I need to do is figure out how to use the 2wire as a modem only. So far, I have researched 2 ways: 1) Get the super-admin password from bell. They refused. Even though we are no longer leasing the modem and we now own it, they wouldn't give up this special password 2) Update the firmware to an unlocked one. I found this guide: » www.kushari.org/2010/07/ ··· mrouter/which told me to go to the routerhomepage/tech/upgrade.html (in my case, » 192.168.1.254/tech/upgrade.html), but I just got a 404 not found error. So I cannot find the page to upgrade the firmware. If anyone knows any guides on how to do this off the top of their head, it would be greatly appreciated! |

FIXED!WOOHOO IT WORKS ITS FIXED! The reason I couldn't upgrade the 2wire's firmware is because apparently bell changed the firmware upgrade page from "192.168.xxx.xxx/tech/upgrade.html" to "192.168.xxx.xxx/xslt?PAGE=UPGRADE1" in a recent (2012) secret firmware update. I upgraded the firmware to one made by Qwest (someone said it has a better UI than the Singtel one), but there were no guides for setting up bridging mode in the Qwest firmware's UI, only for unlocked Bell and Singtel firmwares, so I was really guessing at most of it. I changed the VCI from 32 to 35 (no idea what that means or does, but a guide told me to), and I changed a bubble from "PPPoE" to "RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging", because it had the word "bridging" in it, and I wanted bridging. No idea what RFC 1483 is, and I do not know the difference between transparent and opaque bridging, but it appears to have bridged. Then I hooked the modem up to my shiny new Netgear N600 WNDR3700 router, selected PPPoE and entered in all my Bell user/pass info, and hooray! It works! But here's the important part: I am downloading 3 different torrents at once, maintaining an average download speed of at least 700kB/s (70% of my max), I am currently connected to 73 peers all at once, and I am still able to post this message to you! HTTP is working perfectly, and it is able to use the remaining 30% of my bandwidth just fine! Before, if I wanted to post this message or surf the web, I would have to turn off my torrent app, and then wait several minutes for the connections to die, before I could finally use http. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help, advice, and wisdom! I had no idea the 2wire was so terrible at handling multiple connections at once. I am curious, does anyone happen to know its actual limit? It seemed like it couldn't even handle more than a dozen or so concurrent connections. |
