Re: Samsung FiOS smart app issues

said by nycdave:

2012 Samsung Blu-Ray models are now supported. Please see if you can download the app now.

Dave...

Don't know if you had a hand in getting this thing done or not but...

At least I can thank you for the heads-up on the app support for 2012 Samsung Blu-Ray players now.

I just D/L'd it onto my BD-E5900 and it went without a hitch (wireless connection to router). Just watched HBO HD (Ch 899) for about 5 minutes and the app worked fine. I have the 25/25 internet plan. I like that the same guide is available as seen on the STBs.

I checked two nights ago and the app was not listed then.

Again, thanks for the heads-up (at the very least).

Glad to hear yours is working now. Still no support for my 2011 TV that Verizon's website said should be supported.

The Samsung site does not list any players that are compatible . Yet it shoes all TVs that are.

VZ site maybe has a few, but it surely does not even come close to having the complete list of TVs and players that are compatible.

I personally have supported TVs that are not listed on the VZ site, and are supported (ex: eh5300). I also have a player that is said to be compatible, yet is not.

If VZ staff is listening here: Please update yor site to show the Full List of compatible TVs and Blu ray players. Recommended to be the same as on the Samsung site, IMO , And then post a link here.

Thank you

I wouldn't hold my breath on an update of the compatible devices on the V* site. Samsung may be more efficient in updating theirs but...

Basically, it appears that your best bet is to go onto the Samsung app site via your TV or BR player (through the device's "Hub"). As noted before, if the app is supported on your device, it'll be listed as one that is downloadable through the device hub.

The FiOS app is under the "Video" heading.

Update: I double checked my "video" apps on my TV today and sure enough, the FiOS TV app was now listed. I'm not sure when it was added but I did not need to update the firmware for it appear, so it looks like the issue was on the Verizon side (not a Samsung issue).

Anyway, I installed it successfully and was able to watch live TV.

I'm glad it's resolved, as I may decide down the road to return one of my STBs, especially if they add the broadcast channels (so I dont have to switch inputs).

...

Why would it be "on the Verizon side?" The Samsung apps are maintained by Samsung and your TV or Blu-ray player pulls them from Samsung, not Verizon -- just like any other Samsung app. Once installed the app communicates with Verizon servers, but the app itself is pulled from Samsung -- just like the iPad app comes from the Apple app store, not Verizon. The reason that no firmware was required is that the Samsung Smart Hub displays available apps from what a server database tells it are available, which changes regularly. It's like the FiOS widgets. When a widget is added to the available list of widgets, there is no firmware change to the STB software.

The reason I replied with this is that often people are critical of Verizon, and most often they deserve it, but I don't believe they do in this case. IMHO.

It became available sometime between 03/03 PM and 03/05 AM. The selection of live channels is an odd subset of what you're subscribed to. So far, I've only watched 125, 620, 895, 899, 902 and 920.

Except for what appeared to be an internet glitch in the Philly area (repeated and frequent video lock-ups for a couple hours), the other night, it has worked very well on what I've watched. I am surprised that the WiFi link between the router and player is so stable.

I also experimented with doing a heavy D/L, maxing out my 25/25 connection (avg D/L speed was 26.9 Mbps at the computer) and it did not seem to affect the quality of an HD movie viewed through the player. I don't know if the system treats data to the player like it does with VOD (by upping the available D/L overhead) but there were no glitches in the video for the 5-minute duration of the D/L.

The HD isn't quite what it is through an HD STB but, considering the cost, it's nothing to gripe about.

One other thing that may or may not be applicable... When I got the player, (BD-E5900) it had firmware version 1054 on it. I upgraded it to v1057 a few weeks ago. Whether that is germane to the app compatibility, I don't know. So, nyrmetros, if you have older F/W on your player and the app does not show up in the Samsung app store on the player, try upgrading the firmware, if you haven't already.

So you were right! The fios application was added on 3/3/13. I was not able to activate it though because I have exceeded the 5 device limit... Which I can't figure out.....

Thought this might be of interest...

Here's a plot of a 10-minute period of what went through my WRT54GS router while watching an HD channel on the player.

Nothing else was happening on my WLAN at the time. My WLAN goes through the Linksys but all Ethernet connections are directly to the Actiontec (primary router). I use the WRT54GS as my WLAN access point because it provides better wireless connection than the Rev. C Actiontec.

PJL,

I believe it was a Verizon problem and here is why. Verizon has updated the app several times to resolve issues and if I look at the version date and number on the app that was installed on my TV today, the release date is 02/27/13.

If you read from the begining of this thread (and another thread that I opened), you'll see how long ago this issue was being worked by VZ. I also have feedback in the direct forum that VZ was working on resolving my issue, so I speak with some historical facts as a basis.

I think there may have been a week's delay on the Samsung side to get it into the app store (I assume for testing/validation purposes).

Bottom line, its working now!

The information you added easily convinced me. Verizon has a terrible track record with app development -- whether it's on Android, iPad, and Samsung as you point out, but at least not on Windows 8 -- oh they don't have any on that platform -- and even their own STB widgets. They put something out that is so buggy that people get turned off by the experience. (See, I can be critical too!)

Now my issue is that according to Verizon my account is only allowed 5 devices to be remotely hooked up to a Fios account, and I am already at that limit...

Do we know when the 2013 Samsung Blu-ray players will be supported?

I just got a BD-F5900 player for another room and updated it with the latest firmware, version 1007. Unfortunately, it appears that the FiOS is not yet available in the app store.

I wonder whether that is a V* or a Samsung issue??? Guess it depends on whether V* has to approve it or whether Samsung needs to test it and update their APP store database.

I can say that the current firmware version number for the (2012) BD-E5900 is 1059. So, there is a difference there.

+1. I'm trying to find a Samsung BD player that supports:
1. The FiOS App
2. Amazon Instant Streaming
3. The RedBox app
4. Plex
5. Netflix

Can't seem to find a BD player that maps to all 5 of these (I can't find one that even maps to the top 2). Any ideas?

2 things:

1) bluepoint - What site do you go to , to see the Samsung release notes? I have been trying to find out ever since I bought.

Thanks

2) Ramias - AFAIK, no 2013 Samsung BD players work. The ones that work with the FiOS app are certain D series and E series BD players.

Regarding Amazon Prime , the Samsung 2013 BD F5900 and BD F7500 should work. There are no 2012 or less models that are compatible. Again, AFAIK.

Just go to here »www.samsung.com/us/suppo ··· ownloads and feed your TV model, it will bring you to all downloadable links. Once in that page the firmware version is clickable to reveal the changelog.

Don't bother. They can pull the rug out from under you at any time. The app was working perfectly with my LG BD player, and then Verizon just dropped support for it. They gave notice, but no explanation. It was a 2012 model.

The only thing I'd trust the app to keep working with is the iPad, if that.
