Re: It's HOT! Here is what AccuWeather is saying about February for my area. Looks about normal. Keep in mind that forecasters ability to be accurate even on a day to day basis is suspect.

 | He could very well be right about Maine. As you know, it's such a large state there can be a significant difference between Maine weather and that of southern New England.
In other words, keep the cold in Maine where it belongs. |

| reply to Dominokat Yup - been pretty cold here at night the last week or so, not bad during the day as long as the sun is out and not too windy.
The up side is that having a cold winter should cut down on summer bugs. I sure hope it reduces the tic population, they were terrible last summer here in southern NH.
We heat with cord-wood and use the stove as a preheater for hot water. During cold snaps like this we have too much hot water.

Rightly or no, I chalked it up to heat-suppressed feeding. Do you know if the population is actually much bothered by cold? I've no idea but hope that it's true.
Then again you may have been bemoaning wood ticks? Get chickens. They're amazing and will wipe out the population in their range. This from direct experience in Carroll County. Not sure how effective they are on deer ticks.
Deer tick life cycle image is courtesy of some kind Wikipedia editor. The entry is good overall.

Last winter was very warm. Which saved me about 1200 in heating. Very little snow to boot.
Because of the warm winter, we expected A LOT of misquotes. Normally my home has a lot anyway do to some wet lands.
HOWEVER, as it turned out, last year I had an unusually quiet misquote problem.
Is that a coincidence? I don't know but I liked being able to step out without being bitten to death!

Riiiiiiight. People that lived out in the sticks had subdivisions built around them. Wash Ashore Suburbanites don't much care for chickens. Someone actually stopped by the house with a petition "To Ban Boats Kept in Yards". Nantucket is Deer Tick and Lyme Disease Central. No chickens and people bitch about the deer hunt every year. Nantucket Wash Ashores are a particularly nasty breed. |

With all due respect to Punxsutawney Phil, Nantucket's Quentin the Quahog begs to differ on his prediction.
Quentin squirted to the left Saturday afternoon, predicting six more weeks of winter and giving a second opinion on Phil's forecast of an early spring. Phil emerged from his home on Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania Saturday morning, but did not see his shadow.
In the latest edition of the island's 30-year tradition, Nantucket's emergency management coordinator, former harbormaster Dave Fronzuto, opened Quentin around noon at Brant Point.
The location was moved from the town pier to Brant Point in honor of Allen Holdgate and the late Flint Ranney, who started the tradition years ago and passed away in late 2012. _____________________________________________

 | As the week progresses, the deeper the snow gets. On Monday they forecast the most snow south of Boston and very little north of the Ma/Nh line. |
