Microsoft: This is just the start of the Windows 8 business ... Microsoft held its regular quarterly conference call* with financial analysts today as part of its fourth quarter 2012 financial announcements. During the call and its follow up Q&A session, the company's chief financial officer Peter Klein seemed very optimistic that Windows 8 growth would continue, despite outside reports of slow sales of the first Windows 8 specific products.
Klein hinted that the first sales of Windows 8 products by third parties were impacted by low supplies for certain PCs. That's certainly true for products like Dell's XPS 12 convertible laptop which, at the moment, is showing a February 11th ship date for orders placed today.
Klein said that this is just the start of the growth of Windows 8 in the PC marketplace and the feeling we got while listening to the conference call is that Microsoft believes that when more Windows 8 products are available, the more sales will rise for those PC. Indeed, a number of new Windows 8-based touchscreen laptops have already been announced for launch later this year, including the HP EliteBook Revolve tablet-notebook hybrid, shown above, that's expected to launch sometime in March. ...

I've been buying Microsoft stock lately as I know the research and product development teams have been loading up for bear and its going to be almost an embarrassment of riches coming out.

Microsoft needs a Windows 8 fix now

"Microsoft has to patch Windows to disable this tiled interface. Just have it boot to a normal desktop rather than what amounts to a useless splash page.
The company should immediately plan on a point upgrade, as in Windows 8.1. We have not seen these point upgrades for years, and now is the time to reintroduce the idea.
Windows 8.1 would get rid of any touch capability and the Metro interface altogether. It also would kill any of those apps that run full-screen only." |

 | I'm really trying hard to like it. I still prefer Windows 7, but Windows 8 with Pokki installed is making it an interesting proposition.

If not it loaded to desktop by default. If the pc was a interchangeable Notebook/tablet, it could determin which mode and prompt you if you wanted to go to metro.
Using metro in a Server product however.. BAD MS..

Ha, I hear ya. I tried Server 2012 evaluation in vmware workstation. I think the goal was to make the UI so G.D. ugly so that users just install the "core" install and use remote management tools to administer the server. Less services on the server, less footprint for attacking it I guess.
And what's with the windows and their bright teal boarders and clashing bright red X to close in the corner? You can't even change it unless you install the "Desktop Experience" role. Again, more stuff on the server, larger attack vector.
2008R2 seems to work great. |

How many people down the line green-lighted the changes? It had to be a lot. I'd no more buy any Microsoft stock now then I would AOL, not that I think MS is going to go down the tubes. AOL had nothing when the company was at its peak. It was a scam. Microsoft has decades of product development in a thousand different technologies. I hope this is a bump in the road where really bad decision making accompanied by an emperor with no clothes allowed a chain of event to unfold that can be corrected and even taken advantage of. What Microsoft is doing with the tablet is quite interesting, but they need to give us back our desktops. |

I've been buying Microsoft stock lately as I know the research and product development teams have been loading up for bear and its going to be almost an embarrassment of riches coming out. It's going to be an Embarrassment alright, an Embarrassment to Microsoft. They really have few good ideas. Metro is a an ugly unproductive mess and not good in any factor it is tried on.
Everyone falls from the top at some point and Microsoft's demise can't come soon enough.
I think we are starting to see the beginning of the long, slow death of Microsoft. You can say it's post-PC and they have no clue about that business. Win Phone is pretty much DOA, Surface is DOA, and Win 8 is not doing well. Server sales are also down and they are facing increasing pressure from Linux on that front.
Good Luck - the tides are slowly turning away from MS and the best thing to do is diversify! |
