Has anyone noticed that Google SafeSearch is now mandatory?

Starting a couple months ago, Google took away the ability to turn off SafeSearch for its .com domains, although the sites in other countries still had that ability. I started a thread on Google Groups and all Google would say was that they weren't censoring anything, people just had to be more specific in their queries. That was demonstrated to be false.

Now Google has made this change to all their sites world-wide.

Instead of the old three options of "Off", "Moderate" and "Strict", you now have "Show most relevant results" and "Filter explicit results". The latter is equivalent to strict filtering and the former is the equivalent of moderate filtering.

There is now no way to get unfiltered search results using Google!

Some people will say that it doesn't matter because there are other ways to find porn. That ignores the bigger picture. How do you know what's being filtered? Can you guarantee that only porn is being filtered? No, you can't. How do you trust filtered search results if you can't turn the filters off for comparison?

Who appointed Google the net's nanny?

All the lawyers and politicians in the USA who blame Google for actually delivering search results you were interested in.

Then you're the exception because everyone else is only seeing two options; "Show most relevant results" and "Filter explicit results".

I did my changes thru an iPad and then saved them to my profile. Maybe Google hasn't changed the "Settings" interface to a mobile device like an iPad. And then the saved settings carry over to all the different platforms.

For the hell of it I trialed Blekko about a year ago and happily kept it as primary search engine. About 85% of my searches are satisfied there. Blekko's algorithms slowly move towards more presumptive behavior but still a sizable gap between them and the Goog. Not nearly as much localization or highly leverages "relevancy" ordering. Fast, clean interface, nice /options in search field. Recommend peeps try it for a few weeks.
