[CFL] Upgrade to Turbo, VPN doesn't work anymore

I just upgraded to BHN Turbo and a tech came out to install a new ubee DVW3201B modem. Now VPN doesn't work. The internet connection from the modem goes to a WRT54G router. I can connect VPN if I hook the laptop directly to the internet cable from the modem, but cannot do VPN over the WRT54G wireless.

It all used to work with the old modem. Ideas?

Maybe some ports need to be open for VPN? Your ports might be closed due to the Router part of the UBEE. Maybe BHNtechXpert Can do a DMZ to your WRT54G router ? Maybe put it in Bridge Mode? If you post in the Direct Forums BHNtechXpert can pull up your account and take a look at your configuration Please include your IP address »Bright House Networks Direct

Re: [CFL] Upgrade to Turbo, VPN doesn't work anymore

Okay I found it...for some reason it wasn't showing in the list when I looked the first time. The reason you are having problems is you are running double NAT. Your modem is a router already and also has wireless that is better than the WRT54G.

Take the old Linksys router off and connect via the Ubee wireless or turn off the DHCP server in the WRT54G AND take the cable out of the WAN port of the Linksys and plug it into port 1 and just use the Linksys as an access point....

OR

bridge the modem and use the Linksys as your router (not advised in this case).

OK, I unplugged the WRT54G, but my laptop doesn't see any wireless network from the ubee. Also, the wifi light on the front of the ubee is not lit.

I actually have a couple of computers hardwired through the WRT54G, so not sure I want to get rid of it. I'd be up for getting a newer router though. Recommendations?

I know you advised against it, but if I keep the WRT54G (or even get a new router), how exactly do I bridge the modem? I've read a lot about it online, but haven't figured out exactly how to do it or even exactly what it means. I've figured out how to log in to the ubee at 192.168.0.1 with user/user, but don't know which settings to change in order to bridge the modem.

Oh okay so wireless is not enabled on your mdoem because you are turbo only. So your next option is to turn off the DHCP server in the Linksys, unplug the ethernet cable from the Linksys WAN port and plug it into switch port 1 on the Linksys then reboot the Linksys.

Your final option is to bridge the modem which I must do as you don't have access to the configuration page for the Ubee bridge section. I can do that in the morning otherwise try the option above.

As for new router I am a big fan of the Asus RTN56U or if you must have USB 3.0 ports on a router go for the Asus RTN65. The RTn66 is nice but...you don't need to pay that for a really I mean really good router...the first two options will work just fine.

Well, I think the best option for me right now is to have you bridge the modem. That will get me up and running in the short term and then I can go pick up and configure a new ASUS RT-N56U at my leisure. I've been itching for a dual band router anyway, so this seems like a good reason.

I appreciate all your help and recommendations. If you need anything more information from me to bridge the modem, I'm sure you'll let me know

OKay being done now...in meantime I have discovered a signal issue that wasn't there yesterday. We're going to let this go until tomorrow to see if it goes away...in meantime please check connectors on the modem (cable), make sure they are hand tight and also follow back to wall and do same. If you have relocated the modem or added a splitter please remove it. If it goes past tomorrow I will need to send a tech out.

Please make sure the only device connected to the modem is your router. The modem MUST be plugged into the WAN in port on your modem.

I checked cable connections. Modem was fine. I hand tightened the one into the wall a little, but not much. Modem is in the same place and no splitters.

Was looking at the difference between RT-N65U and RT-N66U. As you said 66R is overkill, but I may grow into it. Also, the longer range of the 66R may help just because of the physical layout of the house. Only $40 difference at newegg. May be worth it.

You'll let me know if we need to get a tech?

All true. The only ethernet cable coming out of the modem is on the ETH1 port. That cable goes to the WAN port on the WRT54G.

Please make sure the DHCP server is now ON in your Linksys and reboot the Linksys
