Re: VPN - START Cable customer said by elnad2000:The only problem I have with VPN is that you cannot use QOS in your router. I have Toastman Tomato and if I activate QOS, the speed drops to almost nothing. I discovered that while playing with settings to find out why the VPN was so slow at first. That is strange. Very possible that your VPN packets were catagorized into the "crawl" class. Don't think you need to disable QOS. Maybe find out what outgoing port is used for your PIA VPN service, and set that to a higher class. |

| reply to DrugTito I'm also a PIA customer. I really like their VPN. I'm on 10mbps cable with ElectronicBox. In uTorrent, a VPN to North York maxed out my 10mbps. This summer, I will switch to 20mpbs with EBox so I hope the connection to VPN will be as fast as now.
What I really like about PIA is the 3 differents connections at the same time. My HTPC is connected on East US to watch Hulu Desktop, my media server (for torrents) is connected to North York since this server can maxed out my connection and my main rig is not connected to have the best ping possible for gaming.

The only thing I would like with PIA is an option in the software they use to connect you to disconnect and reconnect every 48hrs so I don't have one of their shared-ips for too long. I prefer to renew my connection once in a while to clear everything. |

| reply to DrugTito I'm using PIA. I've connected via their in house software and also have via my router (RT-N66U). I usually get 10Mbit download from their Toronto or US servers. I'm on TSI 18 and will be switching to Start next month.
Some people have had bad experiences with PIA, but my experience has been pretty good. Its cheap and fairly easy to sign up/cancel etc.. Signed up for 1 month and will be going to a 1 year subscription. |

| reply to TelusAnonUse Running the VPN on the router, or on the PC doing the downloading?
My experience to date with VPN on routers, even FAST routers, is that they choke the connection trying to keep up with the crypto. Running it on a fast enough PC gives me wire speed (30-45mbits/sec download). Running on a router chokes things down to 10-20mbit/sec, as does running it on a low-power Atom-based netbook.

 | reply to Perma I have PIA with a Telus 25 and Eastlink 20 connection. In either case, with PIA running (I have a tomato router on each connection) I have never gotten more than about 3mbps while downloading, no matter if I'm using a US, Canadian or European setup. Eastlink sucks at any time (that 20 mbps connection usually runs around 5), but Telus can rock the full bandwidth without the VPN running. |

 | reply to neuromancer1 Funny, I have amazing speeds with them, even when I'm connected to a server in Chicago. I download, stream netflix, and play games online while maintaining a solid ping. |

| reply to DrugTito I'm looking into AirVPN. I've requested a free trial.
Unblock-us is only about "masquerading" your location so you can access geographically-restricted content (e.g. stream a TV show from CBS.com when you're in Canada, access other countries' Netflix). |

Before the start 35/3 upgrade, on 28/1 connected to Netherland, utorrent typically max out at 1.6MB/s - 2.0MB/s due to upload being max out at 125KB/s. Haven't done any test after the upgrade but should be able to max out now.
PIA speedtest link on its site is what I also get when testing at speedtest.net. |

| reply to DrugTito said by DrugTito:Is it like DNS? How does it work , if you don't mind sharing, if it doesn't take too much of your time, don't want to bother you Yes it's true. It is "like DNS", so not a true VPN, but at least it does trick Netflix, etc... into thinking that you're in the US or UK (although with Netflix, in conjunction with Unblock-US, you can choose several different Netflix catalogues to choose from, such as Netflix UK). Although with Unblock-US, your internet traffic is not encrypted, like it would be if you signed up with a VPN provider. More info at »unblock-us.com . A "DNS" service can have limitations. Sometimes it doesn't always work to trick a server into thinking you're in another country. |
