3 edits | My lovely cat is dying I took my cat to the vets this morning. What started as a pretty good day, has turned very bad.
What I thought was my cat being constipated, turned out worse. She has kidney failure. Do nothing, and she may live about 3 months. Or treat her, and she may live another year.
I am distraught. She really looks healthy and still plays and runs. She sleeps a lot, but I took that as her just being old. But that is a product of the failing kidneys. She's 17. |

| Looking at her, you would never know anything was wrong. She looks good, still plays and jumps. This whole thing was totaly unexpected. At the moment she is okay, but that will change pretty fast apparently. She is at stage 3 of failure. 4 is the worst. |

I'm so sorry Dom. I think you're right: make the most of the quality time you still have and help her go when it's in her best interests. Am sure your vet will advise you.
Our 17-year old has chronic kidney failure (CRF) and so far we've controlled it with prescription food--but she was diagnosed at an early stage. She was diabetic for 9 years, until last September. I make the most of every single minute together. Never know what tomorrow might bring (or take). |

I'm sorry, Dominokat. Having pets pass away is very painful, and seeing them sick is even worse. When I lost my guinea pig, MaryBell, she died painfully, and it hurt like hell seeing her that way. I am not allowed pets where I am renting, but even if they were, the heartbreak makes me wonder whether I'll ever keep a companion again.

"Callie" is really doing great. She continues to follow me everywhere (always has) and purrs when I pet her.
After today, and going to the vets, I think she is more aware of her condition and is even more depending on me to help. |

As another cat owner we both will keep your cat in our prayers. I think I would probably do the same as you. But I would make sure he/she was not in any pain while she finishes out her life and readies herself for the Rainbow Bridge.

I just thought she was constipated, as it has happened before and has nearly the same symptoms. (No poop, not eating, groggy..)
She is still going okay. When she isn't sleeping (which she does a lot of now) she still follows me everywhere. Purrs, wants to be petted. About the only thing so far, is her sleeping all the time and not eating a lot.
She is losing weight, not good. But that is part of the condition. She nibbles food. Sometimes she eats a whole serving, but that is way not normal now.
Sometime she will get to the point of not eating at all. Days after she will start getting worse and that is when I will put her down so she won't suffer. |
