1 edit | Weird hardware... what to do with it? (Image is of a UNC-610 in pieces at my office.)
I was given two unique pieces of hardware from my work today. First one is called a JACE-NXS (For Vykon by Siemens). It is a 650MHz Celeron, 512MB ram, no sound, dual 10/100 Ethernet ports, CompactFlash slot, and a 40GB notebook hard drive. (Soon to have a 100GB... how do you think I ended up with it??) The best thing is no moving parts, except for the hard drive (Or if I put the CF card in, it will boot and run off of that!)

Anyway, It is supposed to have XP Embedded on it. (I have another post elsewhere on that.) I was thinking about what I could do with it. Everything from running a firewall, to even a small Minecraft server. Anyone have any ideas?
Similarly, I have another device called a "UNC-610". It is basically a small box w/ a 1.2GHz Celeron based single board computer. It also has 512MB ram, a CF slot, dual Ethernet (though only one is 10/100), and a full size (3.5") IDE hard drive. Advantage here is this one has three PCI slots in it as well.

It also runs XP Embedded.
I was just trying to think of the different things I could do with these devices. The 610 uses a standard AC power cord, but the NXS uses a AC to 24VDC (yes, DC) converter. They both have LONworks communications, Niagara R2 licenses, and were free!
I thought about installing Ubuntu on the 610, and even seeing how far I could push it (upgrade the processor and RAM as far as it would let me go.) -- "F is for Fire that burns down the whole town... U is for Uranium...... Bombs... N is for NO SURVIVORS!!!!!" Sheldon Plankton

| reply to neonhomer Celeron - holy crap you said "Celeron". I used to burn those things like toast trying to OC them. I think the sweet spot was 300mHz to 450'ish. Can't remember. That's actually an impressive amount of RAM (512) and disk space (40) for the Celeron 650 based box. These things musta been appliance boxes set/forget.
I like your Minecraft server idea. -- That's "MISTER" Kafir to you. |

Some newer embedded systems are less expensive and draw less power (not that a Celeron is a hungry beast or anything), depending on what you do with it.
I'm laughing at how all the chips have labels/stickers on them to indicate probably revision, but also certainly to hide what they are. If you want a list of what chip does what I can tell you with pretty good accuracy without removing the stickers (I can't give you model numbers, but I can tell you functionality ). -- Making life hard for others since 1977. | reply to neonhomer I'd chuck em in the dumpster...
they are so old and inefficient you could buy any used/refurb system for $100, spend less on electricity, and have the power of both machines.
I wouldnt do anything with them. |

| It's not that they are inefficient, I was just interested in what I could do with them.,
The NXS I am thinking seriously about turning into a firewall, running pfsense or something.
The 610 I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking about turning into a Linux based Minecraft server. |

Minecraft Server? No, unless it would be for 2-3 players MAX. Minecraft Server, like the game, is RAM hungry, and, I ran one on a Sempron 64+ 3100 with a gig of RAM, and it didnt like more than 4 people, and even then it suffered a lot of server lag.
But, always worth a shot if you want to try! |
