FWIW, I tried to image a failing Mandriva system hard drive, using dd, which aborted upon reaching a bad sector. dd_rescue, reporting about 45 bad sectors, made a complete image that I put on a different drive and that has been working since. Thanks for the reminder, I completely forgot about dd_rescue!
If it is available it is preferable over plain dd for data rescue operations (it automatically switches between large blocks for speed and small blocks for maximum data recovery as needed).
