Re: [NV] New speeds live in Vegas

Well the one i linked you to, runs for a longer period of time compared to the comcast one, which is as quick as the standard speedtest.net site. For a speedtest one that runs a little longer when testing is always better .

What's everyone's opinion on the best router to use for the new speeds?

There is never a best router, but the current router I am using, and think is very good router is the Asus RT-N66U.

I use that one as well.

Not speaking for my employer (obviously), but I use the RT-AC66U, the slightly newer brother of the RT-N66U, and it works really well for me. Check out Merlin's firmware build for it as well, until DD-WRT or somesuch finalize theirs. (And I knew Merlin when he was still an Amiga dev on IRC as RMerlin... mohahaha)

Just get a new gigabit router and you'll be all set

(Your perference on DD-WRT or Tomato compatibility narrows it down which is where you doing some work comes into play).

Yes if you use either the RT-N66U, or RT-AC66U, and you just use the asus stock firmware. Look to use RMerlin's asus based build's, as he correct's a good amount of issue's, and has added a couple nice little features. While still keeping his build's based off of asus's own build's.

Life is good for me in Tempe:

Cisco DPC3010 modem
Asus RT-N56U router (custom firmware)

These results were from my laptop connected via 2.4GHz wireless to the router

Yeah, I just keep hoping DD-WRT gets updated - I use VLANs at home, and while I've used RMerlin's JFFS-based scripts and hardware hackery to do it, would be nice to have it in the GUI.

My one big complaint is the thing reboots for ANY change - even just updating port forwarding causes the router to reboot resulting in nobody having any connectivity for 2-3 minutes... arrrrgh.

Well I have rebooted several times along with the router, and I still have 25/2 on Premier. No speed increase for me I guess.

I was just thinking why not use shibby's/Toastman's tomato firmware, but I don't think they support your RT-AC66U yet, they do the RT-N66U . I am sure they will get one out probably in next couple month's.

Well calling in was useless as normal. Phone rep said my router was the problem. Even though I bypassed it and still have the same speeds. Set up for a tech visit, which won't do any good. But we will see. Asked for a re-provision on the modem and phone rep didn't even do that, said everything looks good. Scheduled a tech visit. Lets see what the tech says tomorrow.

I am using a gigabit router. The Netgear WNDR4000. I found out there's a bug in the DD-WRT firmware for it that limits the WAN port to 100Mbps (even though it says it's connected at gigabit speed). I just upgraded my modem and it still wont do over 100Mbps, (with the router attached, but I max my speeds without it going straight from PC to modem) so I decided to check the DD-WRT forums and found a few people have confirmed the same problem with no solution. I'm thinking about getting another router now unless I can find out which version of DD-WRT will fix this bug. The stock firmware is horrible, so I'd rather not go back to that. :P

If anyone knows a solution it would be much appreciated.

Not bad for $32 a month.

Cord cutting is imminent. Once that happens I'll probably change my review to reflect the improvement of service.

That "$32 a month" has me wondering... are you referring to a package as part of a bundle (the $99/month cable/phone/Internet thing)? Just curious...

Nope, just $32 (well, 32.50) a month for premier internet. I also pay $34 for economy TV with 3 cable cards. After taxes and whatnot I pay about $66.50 a month.

There's no tax for internet, so once I cut the cord, I'll only be paying $32.50

How did you manage to get it for $32 a month? That's less that the promotional 6 month price

I asked if they had any discounts and the guy just offered it to me when I was changing services.

At first he was saying there would be an install fee unless I got triple play, and I was saying that would be fine because I *might* use the phone for a fax.

He then said there was a deal to get 50% off (or something like that) your internet service for 12 months for getting triple play. I asked if that would still apply if I got rid of the phone service, and he said yes.

After about a week of having the phone service, I found my free (no monthly fees) VoIP service worked fine with my fax, so I dropped it. No point in paying $20 a month (phone $13, taxes $7) for something I won't use.

Well after going through several phone jockeys I found one that checked the flag on my account where it didn't have D3 on it. He set it and I got my premier speed upgrade. Others just wanted to blame my equipment and send a tech. Glad there are some that take time to go through things instead of just trying to get off the phone with you.

Yeah the phone people are so hit and miss. I remember when I first got HSI in 1997, I called them up and they told me it wasn't available in my area in spite of putting hangers on my door telling me to order. I called a month later and found they had the wrong address on record (WTF?) they didn't even bother to check.

Last time I called cox, I happened to get a tech that didn't just tell me to reboot my computer. That's like a one in a million chance right there, and to my surprise the guy actually understood networking. Cox needs to hire more people like him.
