Warcraft Movie

Duncan Jones has now confirmed that he will indeed be directing the movie, saying on his personal Twitter account:

He also retweeted several humorous messages about the project:

Source Code and Moon director Duncan Jones will reportedly direct the feature film version of Blizzard Entertainment's video game franchise Warcraft for Legendary Pictures.

"The Warner Bros.-based production and finance outfit is eyeing a fall 2013 start and a 2015 release," according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Warcraft is expected to have a budget north of $100 million."

What are your thoughts of a Warcraft Movie?

I dunno, depends on what it will be filmed in.
Live action with CGI and green screen like lord of the rings? might be ok.
Though I'd prefer an animated movie, like the intro movies in WOW.
At least it would be easier to get the look and the feel of the action.

And as long as it's not the one rumored plot I read about.

A group of friends are pulled into the game after a magical spell goes wrong.

I seriously doubt that. I would have loved a story around the time of the lich king, but I feel opportunity has passed.

I feel the same as well. As I told others Blizzard should have done this at the peak of WoW. The Lich King story is probably the best of the story lines.

That would cost a shitload more than $100 million.

I've been following rumors of this since 2008. I won't believe anything until I see a trailer.

And I think it should be about Arthas.

Would it? I don't know. What's the typical budget cost for one of the earlier pixar movies? A shitton more labor certainly, but you'd offset those costs by not paying actors (only voice overs).

I'm ambivalent. Could be awesome, probably won't be, should have struck when the iron was hot several years ago, but better late than never, etc.

I'd prefer to see it in the style of the Blizzard cinematics instead of a LOTR fantasy type film tbh, but that won't necessarily kill it. What would kill it is a terribad plot. If the one mentioned here is true I'm just going to pretend the whole thing isn't happening.

I'd definitely love to see that. His betrayal to me is the absolute high point in the game.

I never even thought of it being a LOTR fantasy type film. That would be corny or just plain weird.

Yeah, then they can save money by re-using all their old cg sceens in the movie.

It should be about something everyone can relate to. It will be about a group of adventurers:

1. Tank- Paladin. character name: Imaleet
2. healer: Shaman. character name: Uwontdiez
3. DPS- Hunter. character name: Legolasxx
4. DPS-DK- character name:Necrodaking
5. DPS-Druid character name:Boomchkn

They travel to a far-off, mist covered isle. Upon arriving they fight monkeys and cockroaches for 90 minutes, then a wise Panda in coveralls shows up to give them a farm to grow carrots.

Next they travel behind the hidden gate and a group of pandas give them a series of tasks.

Then the next 15 movies will be about them waking up the next day to do the same tasks again. At the end of the 15th movie they get a groundhog pet.

If they put the same team in charge of their intro cinematics I will definitely go.

It has to be CGI. Live action would be stupid, imo.

Remember the 2009 film 'A Christmas Carol'? It cost 200 million.

Most CGI movies these days are 80-100 million.

I couldn't see Blizzard making a feature length film with the same quality that their cinematics have for $100 million. $150 million, maybe...If they said $150-200 million it'd be more believable to me.

And if anyone thinks they'll have a production budget of $100 million and not use real actors is ridiculous...I mean, having a big name voice the lead will draw in the non-gamer crowd. And that demographic would be needed to come out in throngs to make the film any sort of success.

Why do you think movies like Shrek are so successful? The cast is probably more directly responsible for the success of the films than the production.

Hugo Weaving should play Nozdormu.
Angelina Jolie would be Ysera
Cathrine Z would be Alextraza
Chris Evans as Kalecgos
Ving Rames could do Thrall
Morgan Freeman would be Eatrigg
Terry Crews could do Garrosh
Chris Pine could do Varian Wrynn
Will-I-Am would do Vol'jin
Russel Badger would be Baine Bloodhoof
Famke Janssen as Jaina
Lucy Liu as Lady Sylvanas

edit: James Earl Jones is clearly the voice of the Lich King
(with Christian Bale as Arthas)

Stanley Tucci as High Tinker Mekkatorque
Robbie Coltrane as Magni Bronzebeard
Kat Dennings as Moira Thaurissan
...

lol... well, that was fun.

The guy is epic and should be immortalized solely for that voice-over.

I really hope for a live action movie that (obviously) makes heavy use of special effects.

I really think the story will be centered around a human character, regardless what it may be about. Simply for cost effectiveness and ease of production. If not Arthas; Rhonin's side of The War of the Ancients would be an awesome story to see on screen. But I'm a little biased there since I just read that book.

CGI characters who are played by real actors in front of a green screen, think Golem from LotR, would probably be utilized for races that would be almost impossible to create costumes for.

Seriously, I've been following this rumor for 5+ years...I've thought about it from almost every angle. Blizzard cinematic-style CGI would be awesome, but I don't think it would appeal to a wide enough audience...especially with the PG-13/R rating the film would more than likely receive. I think the only way to seriously make money with this is to make a live-action LotR/Hobbit style film.
