Just got the 3000D from Cox to use on Premier (Just upgraded). I haven't seen speeds anywhere near 50 down, highest I have seen is 32 down and its pretty consistent on hitting 32 and staying there.
Coxtech, would this be the same issue as the other people were having? The account being DOCSIS 2 and not DOCSIS 3 (I did upgrade from a DOCSIS 2.0 modem)? |
|
|
If you just upgraded to a 3.0 modem your account is probably not correct. |

That's what I figured. I'll give them a call, thanks!
Edit: Called and they updated the code. Everything is running smooth now! Man, getting a good support tech makes calling and fixing the issue a breeze. |

Annual price increase right along with this speed increase. Awesome. |

Anyone have any idea why this upgrade would have caused my router to suddenly become unreliable?
I'm on premiere (went from 22/5 to 50/10). hardware: WRT54GL router running tomato shibby firmware motorola surfboard SB6120 cable modem with firmware "SB612X-1.0.5.1-SCM00-NOSH Dec 21 2010 15:52:06"
Everything has been stable for a couple years now, suddenly this last week after the upgrade the router has become unstable, you load a website, use streaming radio, whatever, and it will drop out every couple minutes for 10 seconds or so, wired and wireless. I get that my download speed is probably high enough now to saturate the wan port on this old router but I don't understand why even low bandwidth activities like 96kbps radio streaming now drop out constantly.
I have tried upgrading the firmware on the router, clearing nvram, rebooting it, all to no effect. If I plug straight into the modem with a computer I get 64mbps down (powerboost may be part of that) and it's stable. If I go through the router I'm lucky to get 10 down. Prior to the upgrade I would get the advertised 22 or greater all the time.
Is it possible my router was on its last legs and this pushed it over the edge, or could something else be going on? |

May be time to think of getting a new router. The 50 may be pushing the routers limits and if you use any QOS or other routing features may not get the full speed. Just did a little googling seems to confirm the WAN throughput will not do 50. Time for a new router. What I have read I may have misinterpreted just googled your router and throughput. I have the older version of the router and it is rock solid just at the lower speed package. Also do not fully use QOS etc. as no real need with my use. If i had to really do QOS even at 25 I might think of a new router also. The firmware can not make up for the hardware. With today's speed faster hardware is needed. I am talking WLAN not LAN. Also if you are heavily into say a media server, transfering large files between computers etc. even the LAN falls short of gig speeds available now. |
|
|
Yeah I figured that would be the case. It doesn't surprise me that the wan/lan ports can't keep up after looking at the throughput review on smallnetbuilder.com However I'm surprised that it would suddenly just start dropping connection to the internet randomly when not even pushing high speeds.
In any event after wasting many hours I caved and ordered an ASUS RT-N66U which should be able to keep up just fine based on reviews. I would have gotten the ASUS RT-AC66U but decided against it since it has no working version of tomato, costs $35 more, and I don't see myself owning any 802.11ac devices in the next couple years. Maybe if a Nexus phone is released with it but I don't see that kind of throughput making any difference on a phone in the near future. |

Linksys released the WRT54GL in 2005.. It's 2013. It's probably safe to say you got your $99 worth out of it.
I used to have a WRT54GL. It had a problem where it could not handle over a few thousand packets per second. This would cause problems with counter-strike when browsing for games as the game browser would send out a flurry of udp packets to hundreds of hosts. |

The WRT54g was one of the best routers that Linksys ever built. Had one for years running 3rd party firmware. However, as has been mentioned with the speeds now being offered with Premier and Ultimate its day has passed.
If you don't want to upgrade your router at this time you could downgrade to Preferred and it should be able to handle it. You would also save a few bucks every month. |

I had a gigabit dorm connection that could realistically do about 250mbps back in 2006 (when hardwired direct) and my WRT54G would stumble and fail to deliver anything above 3 megabytes/second or 24 megabits/second.
I should also mention that this was WAN to LAN performance. I was not using wireless. |

I am running an old WRT54GS with the Teaman mod of the Tomato firmware » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To ··· mparison. I would upgrade to a Netgear WNR3500L V1 for around $30 which supports the Shibby Tomato firmware and Gigabit ports, but I am on the preferred 31/6 plan so the router is not the bottleneck. During off peak hours, my sb5101u peaked at 34 Megabits down and 8 up before Cox's speed upgrade. After the upgrade the downstream was the same, but the peak up was 12. I purchased a used DPC3010 on ebay for $34. I noticed peak upsteams of 16 megabits (then dropping to 6) and the same 34 megabits down. Since it is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, the 8 channels down and 3 up maintain the high speeds during peak hours (vs dropping down to 6 megabits down). I would never get this high speeds during the evenings without the DOCSIS 3.0 modem » speedtest.net/result/250 ··· 7296.png |

I'm in Gilbert, AZ with the Cox Premier Package and have a SB6121 and currently getting anywhere from 30mbps to 47mbps. Here's my latest speedtest.net results:
Would I benefit from getting a new 8x8 DOCSIS 3 modem?

Your 6121 should be able to handle Premier speeds. I was getting better than 60Mb down with my 6120. |

I live on Gilbert and Southern in Mesa Arizona Ive done about 4 speed tests today here is what I see: I have had the Motorola 6120 for over a year I used to often see speed of over 2 MBp/s but not for a long time. Any thoughts on what I should do? Signals: » www.dropbox.com/s/age4xx ··· 0631.pngSpeedTest: » www.speedtest.net/result ··· 2372.png |

Thanks all. Did not even have knowledge of speed increase til yesterday. Went to local Cox store and bought new Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem for my premier service. When I asked rep about hefty $90 pricetag and asked if there were any promotions he lopped $10 off my bill for 6 months. So essentially $30 out the door. Easy install and my speed are up from about 30 Mbps to 60. |
|

I probably shouldn't say anything, especially here , but I haven't been billed yet for the SB6180 I "bought" back in the beginning of January. |
|

So why did Cox increase the speed for AZ but not for CA San diego? We still only have 2Mpbs+ upload , it's been like this for 5 years now compare to other markets that already have higher upload speed (5Mbps+, now 10Mpbs+) |

We still only have 2Mpbs+ upload , it's been like this for 5 years now compare to other markets that already have higher upload speed (5Mbps+, now 10Mpbs+) Cox does things market by market, meaning every market is different. So question's you have, can only be answered by cox people in your market. To me, it just sounds like the Cox CA market has been one of the markets doing there upgrades slowly. As market's like AZ and such have had 6-8 downstream channel's, and 2-4 upstream channel's for a while now. |
|
|
Yea i know AZ had 4 channel upstream for a while now. My area just started 4 channel upstream recently, but they haven't increase the speed yet, was just the 4 channel bonding for upstream upgrade. So do you think they will do some kind of speed increase soon since they upgraded to 4 channel upstream? |
