4GB DDR3
2x 320GB Sata II Drives
2x AMD Branded HD4850's in crossfire
This machine is our winter heater......video cards get hot as crap!

Why not upgrade? They work fine for the purpose they were designed for and upgrading would cost far in excess of hardware and software: it includes extensive testing and documentation that would need to be sent to the FDA for approval. In essence it would have to be done on thousands of machines and would cost millions of dollars and then you would have no real improvement in functionality.

It was a cost vs benefit factor for me in replacing the PSU on a currently limited budget(money was not an object when I had more work), as keeping current machines in top shape takes priority.

Oldest active is my main laptop(most my desktops are newer). AMD Turion II@2.5Ghz(scaled for power management), 6GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD4200 graphics. Plugs along nicely for most of my tasks. Storage is a bit small, but used cloud solutions as my tablet and phone are even smaller and can't accept a usb storage device. I am almost always under unlimited wifi when stationary, except at a few friends. Convenient to stream media and keep the storage free. I run Debian Linux and found a good config with the Gallium3D graphics drivers for that card. Does more with OpenGL than it ever did on DirectX. Lucky for me, most hardware accelerated apps in Linux are OpenGL based. Tried a few DirectX games in WINE. Glitches for some, but overall impressive. Just fyi if you are a Linux user looking to help push that card.

Never really had any problems with Vista, but with all the specials at the time I think we ended up with 4 copies of W7 for $100.

Interesting you should say that,....

I maintained my AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 3800+ system until about Windows 7 went into beta.

Unlike many of the user reports I have heard, I never had significant problems with Windows Vista even when beta testing. I had reasonably robust hardware at the time, my HP scanner worked fine, and I was able to get my HP printer working. Just about everything worked and worked reasonably well. One exception was my Belkin Nostromo n50 but Belkin was notorious for poor driver / software support and I had outgrown the need for it anyway.

Windows 7 on the other hand caused some stability issues with my older AMD hardware. Since it was only the AMD hardware it was then that I decided to decommission them. I tried using such hardware for Windows Home Server but eventually just bought an HP EX490.

This is my Wife’s dedicated telecommute system which is only used about once a week unless there is a real crunch.

I decommissioned the AMD Athlon X2 4800+ / 3800+ / 3500+ / 3000+ and Athlon XP systems some time ago.

I actually built 3 of them at the same time but killed one of them recently by breaking my own rule of not being smart enough to update the BIOS.

Have older computers used routinely for work - main one is a Dell PWS 530 and newer/faster computers for other things but the Sony is used more frequently.

It's my wife's main computer. The integrated wifi has died, so she uses a Buffalo micro USB adapter. Still runs great, and I upgraded the HD from a 320GB 5400rpm drive to a Momentus XT (hybrid).

My mom's Athlon XP from 2003 was put out to pasture (or rather out behind the barn) last year.
