Re: [Speed] Speed increase.

I don't think rebooting the modem is going to be necessary to see the speed increase as it's done via the CMTS. Config files are staying the same.

You still need to reset your modem to pick up the speeds. Your cable modem negotiates the speed settings upon registration only. So to pick up any changes that were made to the CMTS you will need to reboot.

Ah thanks, that's where my misunderstanding came in. I knew in the past a reboot was necessary and just assumed it was re-pulling a boot file.

Weird, you're getting powerboost.

I think the whole "getting rid of powerboost" was a misnomer. I'm seeing more and more capped powerboost not "no powerboost". Perhaps that's what it was really about.

If so, that sucks. A lot. The short extremely high burst was useful. This extra 7 Mbps (27 to 34) I get is worthless. But at least you're getting boost from 50 to 100.

Funny, as Darknessfall might also confirm, when our performance speeds her in CT went up (officially 20/4, but more like 22/4.5) the PB for upload went away entirely, however, the PB on download changed to a big initial boost, then it falls off, as one would expect. It was more like what you are describing now previously in our area.

Your modem must have rebooted overnight then. boot files are necessary for speed profile changes, so while you didn't explicitly reboot the modem, it must have happened.

This is simply not true. This is how it worked in the past, presently Comcast no longer requires Boot File changes to control speed increases. This is now done on the CMTS, the boot file connects your account to your billing speed tier, but not to the actual data throughput. They will just update on their end the Speed for your tier and you will automagically see the increase without any new config files.

Find someone who's had the speed increase and has some fancy new bootfile.

Also unsure how to quote articles from the main page, but there is an article there outlining how and when/where Comcast is doing the upgrades. The last sentence mentions when those on Performance will be upgraded, which as it says is April/May.

News to me, EG See Profile said that the CMTS will store the configuration information on some modems, so a new boot file isn't necessary, just updated information from the CMTS. This way "Blast!" configs stay as "Blast!", et al, without Comcast technicians getting all confused. I'd assume those settings are refreshed when the modem cycles, but perhaps not.

While chatting with support I tried getting a time frame for the upgrade roll outs.. No luck. She found it strange that I was issued a Docsis 2.0 for my Docsis 3.0 service. Modem works fine, however it has a very loud buzz from the power supply, and restarts occasionally.

"For now, we are not provided yet with a specific date for the roll out but this would happen soon. We will send out emails to our customers in the area once the upgrade of speed is being rolled out."

I have the 105 package. I had to switch routers in order to achieve full download speeds. For some reason my DDWRT loaded router, which is faster than my D-Link, would only push 80mbps or so. My stock D-Link, which is much older and with a slower processor, does fine. Just make sure your QOS is shut off on your router. QOS on all three routers that I tried would kill my speeds. In one case it would lock the router up if I tried to torrent.

Well, I just turned off AV and Spyware in my Sonicwall and still am getting 25/4 on speedtest.net here in Bloomington, IL. For some reason, I don't see PowerBoost on Blast (I just upgraded a couple weeks ago.)

Rebooted the Comcast modem just to make sure. So, either they haven't upgraded me yet and they're waiting to upgrade Bloomington or my router (even with services turned off) can't handle more than the 25/4. I'm inclined to think the former, because I'd be getting at least 10 upload instead of 4.

Edit: Added diffprobe. Estimated speed is right on, but the shaping detection is pretty off for my speed package.

Also in Michigan, Battle Creek. Reset my modem an hour ago, no issues or upgrade. However, I am using an older docsis 2.0 modem. Currently on the 30/6 Blast plan.

Heading to the Comcast store tomorrow to get a new modem, hope the increase comes soon

Anybody else having connection problems in miami? I havent been able to connect for 40 mins now. Modem is a sb6120. Hopefully this is due to the changes.

Edit: checked my account for outages and i see that they are experiencing service interruptions.

Not Miami, but here in mid-Michigan I was down for over an hour. I had an IP address, was bonded to all the normal channels, but I kept having BPI and TEK errors and waits. I am still getting tons of T3 and T4 errors, about 1 per minute in my modem log.

My speed went from 16/4 to 1/0.1 It now takes minutes to load pages rather than seconds. Great upgrade! Comcast trouble page says there are local outages. I guess so.

Speed increase has 0 impact on games

There is a lot more to the Internet than games. With multiple active users/servers/services running, the more bandwidth you have the better.

For one person, on one device, less so.

Speed increase has 0 impact on games except if someone is maxing your line out while you play such as a big download or something.

Games are more impacted by latency.

The average online game uses about 1-2mb of bandwidth itself.

That said, so how much it helps depends if anyone uses it heavy now while you game.

Same goes for VoIP, little bandwidth, more latency/ping dependent. High load on line maxing it out will increase ping thus slow down, but if no one is using games/phones will be the same as on a 5mb line lol

How much of a noticeable difference will I notice going from 16mbps to 20mbps? I play Xbox Live, watch movies in HD on Netflix, web browse, DL contents from the Xbox Live marketplace, watch Youtube videos, Twitch.TV, Justin.TV.

I get 16 sustain rate, 20 or more with PB.

I can tell the increase from 12/2 to 17/3. I'd love it if we got bumped to 2x/4 but business class is usually way after residential.

I dunno.

305 already exists and they use fiber for that, this is also kind of pushing the coax and the node as only 8 channels and if someone had that and maxed it out and a few other people had blast no bandwidth would be left for anyone else.

Grant it they can technically add more channels but no modems are out that they will allow plus they are currently playing the what frequencies can be used games.

I would believe the 105 current price turning into the 200mb plan though in the summer.

That said, anyone notice that for a lot of people Extreme 50 was 50/15 and now it's going down to 50/10 for the blast? I know not all areas have 15 upload but you would think new converts would.

I am waiting to see what happens in FL.

On comcast.com if I put 32801 it shows 105mb for 114.99 which is the old 50 price, but lists the same old blast, however if I put my zip in which is right next to that one it shows 105 as 199.95 still.

Who knows what they are doing lol not even the local people know. I spoke with the area eng sup and he said no ETA yet but that most of this was managed from national center :/

I don't think she was supposed to tell me this, but I did the "well, Extreme 50 is the same speed as Extreme 105, so why upgrade?" question, and the representative told me, just now, that it will jump to at least 200Mbps and probably 305Mbps in the Chicagoland area this summer. Apparently flyers just started circulating at the sales desks...

It doesn't have the CPU power to route data that fast? Having 1GB LAN ports are used for switching but going from WAN to LAN is done in software (called Routing - why they are called routers :P) For this to happen fast you need a fast CPU (generally over 400Mhz in the router since it's all done in the software.

HOWEVER - »www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=153481

I just checked that from Fractal and it seems it does have a fast CPU and should be able to pump out high routing performance.

Check the WAN port maybe, maybe the link from the modem to the router is only connecting at 100Mbps which limits you to sub speeds?

Being that a poster above mentioned router capabilities with these higher speeds... Anyone know a good router (that supports VPN) that I could replace mine with that will handle the 50/10 without an issue?

My Sonicwall TZ200W can barely handle the Blast 25/4 package.

NSA220 or better.
